Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

There's an old thread that is very long, and assorted tributes to departed items sprinkled amongst the other TJ threads, so I thought the topic merited a new thread.

My latest eulogy is for the tamari-roasted almonds. The soy flavoring contributed some satisfying umami without a lot of salt. Every time I go, I look in the vain hope that the whole wheat mini-chocolate chip cookies or the truffle oil will have reappeared.... None of these were seasonal items so it appears that extinction is forever. What items do you wish they'd bring back?

  1. vanilla paste.
    chimichurri sauce.
    cioppino base.
the consolation is that they always come up with something new that's great.

+1 on the vanilla bean paste

      1. re: rainey

Look for the vanilla bean paste again around the holidays. It's gone in and out of stock over the years but seems to come back around that time every other year or so.

        1. re: RoxyGrl

          Excellent news!

I was looking for confectioners' sugar the other day. None to be found. A staff person told me it's also a "seasonal" item. Confectioners' sugar! =o

          1. re: rainey

Sadly, i think the vanilla paste is gone for good. While it used to make an appearance at the holidays ( along with frozen puff pastry, peppermint jojos and several other amazing products), the vanilla paste has not resurfaced for at least three years.

      2. re: chez cherie

        yes! the chimichurri sauce.

      3. It's been discussed before, but I was particularly bummed about the Neiman Ranch bacon being dropped.

And now even more so since I saw it at my local "gourmet" market...at 2x the price :(

The Twigs, Flakes & Clusters cereal has been MIA my last two store visits, so I'm afraid for that too.

Cashier told me Monday that Twigs Flakes and Clusters are indeed discontinued. Sigh.

        2. Lunch at work just hasn't been the same without the White Chicken Sesame Noodle Bowl.

          1. The refrigerated soups. Ancient grains (lentil) was especially good. The soups are replaced by beans and mediocre chicken salad. Don't get it.

Any chance the soups will be back in the fall? I could see them laying off the soup for summer. I liked the chicken and barley.

              1. re: sciencediet

With the exception of the gazpacho, the refridgerated soups are seasonal. They will be back in the fall.

                1. re: sciencediet

I was told they are seasonal and will be back in the fall when I inquired about the "Clam Chowdah." I did not understand why a Clam Chowder would be discontinued for the summer, since to me it's a soup associated with summer. I live on the east coast and frequent a seafood restaurant which is only open in summer and which makes probably half its revenue from people ordering their New England clam chowder, no matter how hot the weather is.

                2. re: gnosh

Just saw the lentil soup back yesterday in a Mass. store along with another soup which I didn't focus on. - Agree lentil was very good.

                3. Trader Joe's used to have some pretty good Greek olives in a regular sized can.
I used to buy them four or five at a time.
Haven't seen them in about two years, and miss the product.

                  1. Loved the green beans Prik King from the frozen foods section. Microwaved in minutes and topped with a few of their tiger shrimp it was dinner. Yum!

Missing the grilled salmon that they had in the ready to eat section. It was a great protein boost and perfect for topping a salad.

nd I still miss the hot and sour soup in a tall jar that they haven't carried in years.

                    1. Just today tried to buy four boxes of frozen Korean skewered beef. Gone. Their spot was filled with a bunch of cheerful boxes of awful-sounding entrees. How can so many unpleasant items survive while really good ones go away???!?

You hit the nail on the head. I don't buy or eat meat, and I still have the same complaint. I feel they discontinue good things and often replace them with inferior ones, or continue to sell mediocre items and kill off the good ones.

                      2. the jarred peppadews.

                          No more peppadews is soul-crushing

                          1. re: sleapman

Not sure wjhere you live but you can find peppadews @ Market Basket in New England.

                            1. re: shaebones

I live in Cambridge, MA and the River St. Whole Foods has Peppadews in the antipasto bar ($9.99/lb). The Fresh Pond store seems to have added some oil to the product, at least did the one time I got them there. I'm addicted to these little sweet/spicy peppers!

                        2. They quit selling their half sour pickles a couple of years ago, WHY?
Same with the petit four sized cheese cake bites, WHY?
I found out the other day they have discontinued the frozen "Pasta Italiano", not only WHY? but WHY, GODAMMIT!!!

                          1. 1) The mojito simmer sauce -- our favorite for fish (e.g. tilapia) adding some sauteed onions and cilantro, as demo'd. The curry simmer sauces are okay but not as good.
                            2) About 8 years ago they discontinued a wonderful almost-no-fat tomato based salad dressing. They brought it back once after complaints but then it went away for good. I tried multiple experiments to recreate it, but unsuccessfully.

I wish they would at least give customers the names of the companies who made the items for TJ's once they are discontinued. Often they make the product under another label and just labeled it for TJ's when they bought it from them, but TJ's will not give out that info for the discontinued things. I am in search of the frozen spinach-tofu rolls Tj's used to sell. They were large egg rolls in a pack of 5 in the frozen section.

                              1. re: PantomimeLion

I e-mailed them a few days ago to suggest an icon be added to the shelf label for products about to be discontinued - a sad smiley, waving hand, etc. Got a boilerplate reply that they would pass the suggestion up the ladder. Not holding my breath.

                                1. re: greygarious

I was at a TJ's in Seattle last week and saw exactly this: little signs on products in the freezer case warning that they were about to be discontinued.

                                  1. re: sweetpotater

I've seen those signs on freezer case bins, usually on bright yellow or green paper, for the past few years, but I don't know if they're consistent about it, and I don't recall seeing them on non-freezer shelf labels.

Sometimes a manger will. Don't give up asking.

i have good news & bad news for you about those egg rolls. the good: i know who the manufacturer was and they're still in business. the bad: they *seriously* reformulated/changed the product.

                                    original/TJ's version:
                                    http://www.sunspotnatural.com/shop/pr...

                                    new version:

                                    1. re: goodhealthgourmet

Are you sure these were the ones TJs had? What is different about the reformulation? I think I've seen these but thought they were bite-size and a different thing. The TJ's used to come 5 large rolls to a pack, on a cardboard tray with a clear plastic wrapper in the frozen section.

                                      1. re: PantomimeLion

yes i'm positive the *original* Health Is Wealth product was the one at TJ's. and if you read the ingredients lists in each of the links i provided you'll see how vastly it's changed.

oh, and as for packaging, TJ's sometimes changes it for their needs - different box or bag, different size/count weight.

Thank you - I'll look for these at my local Giant. I'm pretty sure they have it.

Was wondering the same thing about the White Chicken Sesame Noodle Bowl. I believe it was manufactured in Canada but that is all I know. I miss that the most of all hte discontinued TJ items.

                                  2. After a long hiatus I was looking for meringues the other day -- they used to have several different kinds (mini chocolate, chocolate chip, etc.) and I didn't see any. Gone for good?

I bought vanilla meringues at the Scarsdale, NY location last week.
But they were out of the crunchy granola bars.

Happy to report the crunchy granola bars were in stock today. WHEW! Thought I lost those for a minute.

And sadly, the crunchy granola bars have again disappeared. Not even a sign on the shelf. :(

Ruth, your meringues are alive & well. i actually remembered to check today! the guy looked at me like i was nuts when i asked if they had been discontinued - turns out i was standing about 3 feet from the display :) i explained to him that i had never bought them and was asking for someone else.

                                            1. re: goodhealthgourmet

                                              Thanks for the good news!

                                          3. Escargot w/garlic butter in tiny brioche, about the size of a golf ball - lovely appetizers. I believe there were 12 in a box, frozen. They came from Canada. Required a quick heat up in the oven and Yum.

Over the last several years TJ had them but then they go out of stock and no information is ever available. I usually found them in either late Summer on into Fall. They were very, very good.

They are missing in action again, and once again, no information is available... I check every time I visit TJ hoping they'll be back.

                                            1. Trader Joe' reminds me of a comment a friend of mine once made about IKEA. " They have some great things but ones has to be selective as they have an awful lot of crap"

And I've been waiting weeks for my frozen artichokes. Being told they "are waiting for a new crop." When did this ever happen with any other frozen veggie? I have a feeling it's sayonara for the frozen artichokes.

Funny, I've always found TJ staff to be forthcoming and honest about the status of products. They also gave me the hint that when the shelf tag for an item is gone, it means that they are not expecting any more of it.

                                                  1. re: PantomimeLion

thanks, i know the frozen TJ's are less expensive - the ones we were talking about from Safeway et al are jarred. the problem with those jarred artichokes with stems from TJ's is that even though they're not marinated, they're LOADED with sodium - over 400mg per serving. i'm extremely salt-sensitive and limit my sodium intake to 1200mg or less per day (half of what's recommended for most people), so that's just too concentrated for me.

                                                            1. re: goodhealthgourmet

probably because - like me - they assumed you only wanted frozen. i personally stay away from the canned, but i would have mentioned that they have them if i had known you were open to it. sorry about that!

I was there on Monday. The first person told me they "didn't know" when they would be in, and I pressed further and he looked it up and said, "Oh, they're coming in TOMORROW" and then I asked yet ANOTHER employee, who told me they were in the frozen section. There were about 6 bags buried where you'd have to be a detective to find them, and no sign. That's the thing that aggravates me the most about TJs. Half the time the items ARE there, but their displays make it impossible to see them. Or they keep moving things around so they're no longer anywhere near where they used to be. It used to be charming, but really has become tiresome.

Thing about Trader Joe's is that they have a much lower percentage of crap than, say, Safeway. Maybe 80 percent of the stuff at TJ's is crap, but 95 percent of the stuff at Safeway is crap!

The artichokes in water at Safeway I purchased was the Cara Mia brand. It is a very good product and quite delicious served in a chicken rice artichoke salad recipe. I believe Cara Mia was one of the first commercial brands of marinated artichokes out of California.

The chocolate-covered chili-spiced dried mangos, the pre-cooked beluga lentils, the whole grain chocolate chip cookies, and recently the three-pepper salsa.

have you checked Sprouts in Culver City for the jerky? they *may* have it, and their prices are sometimes lower than other places.

                                                                2. There's some hope when a product disappears. My son's favorite popcorn shrimp is gone for good, but the frozen mango on sticky rice they told me had been discontinued showed up in large quantities at another TJ location. I bought lots and lots.

And those frozen precooked brown rice packets that come 3 to a box disappeared from my TJ's for a long while, then magically reappeared and had actually produced offspring, other rice varieties and blends.

Nice texture, the flavor tuna USED to have, a larger can (7 or 8 oz, can't remember), and a fair price. I'd prefer that it were in oil, but it's still great.

So maybe the shortage is just now hitting your area? Or they rotated which stores got cut from the tuna orders to accommodate for the shortage? Regardless, have hope! I'm sure it will be back to you soon.

                                                                              3. I desperately miss the tempura vegetables. I liked the Bird's Nests that they still sell, but the sweet potato in the old package was so good!

The frozen puff pastry has also disappeared, but I'm hoping that's seasonal. The pie crusts used to disappear every summer as well and return in fall - but there's nothing like puff pastry for making quick turnovers when I buy too much summer fruit at the farmer's market! I hope the puff pastry returns quickly. I don't like the Pepperidge Farm very well and Whole Foods is too pricey.

She told me that when a given product appeared on the grocery shelves, people bought a year's worth because they knew they might not see it again for a very long time. She moved to a large city in the Midwest. At first I received breathless reports of her bounty from Whole Foods, TJ's, and the like. I warned her that she might soon be calling TJ's, "Alaskamart". Sure enough, except that in Fairbanks, she knew the canned peaches would be back eventually. No such certainty at TJ's.

White Chicken Sesame Noodle Bowl (a crime!!)
                                                                                                Chicken Vindaloo
                                                                                                Kung Pao Chicken.

I was eating those since at least 2005 and they all disappeared recently. The Pad Thai and Soba noodle things that look like the same company are nowhere NEAR as good.

                                                                                                1. Bye bye to the tofutti better than cream cheese. Tough luck for vegans, lactose intolerants and (our household) high cholesterol sufferers. can probably buy the same brand at a kosher market for twice the price.

                                                                                                      2. I know this is officially about food, but I don't know where else to rant about discontinued TJ's items. I am still bitter about the discontinuation of their loofah soap, which I only got to buy one bar of before I learned it was gone. You assume these things will always be there. It was THE best soap for soothing skin, and even though it had bits of loofah in the bar, it didn't make any mess in the shower like I thought it might. It was the best!!! And yet they still carry several soaps now that I can't stand. I just don't get it. I thought loofah might come back in one form or another.

Thank you to greygarious for redirecting me here. I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find those salmon cans that they used to sell a long time ago? They were fillets with just water and salt, but were delicous. They were the only canned salmon that really tasted like a poached salmon that you would make yourself at home. It used to be sold in a pink narrow long can that had the Norwegian flag and had a pop up lid. I have never seen it anywhere else. It used to be a really big seller but sadly one day it was gone.

                                                                                                        2. I went in to my local TJ's tonight to buy the pita puffs with sea salt. I couldn't find them anywhere, couldn't find a tag on the shelf where they were located less than two weeks ago, nothing. I asked a nice TJ employee about it; he went in back to check and came back with the sad news that they have been discontinued. I am officially in mourning. They are the perfect little light puffs of crunchy snack goodness. I put them on my pizza stone in the oven and melted cheese on top for a healthier alternative to nachos. Sigh. I had been craving them the past two days and now they are gone. Pffffft.

                                                                                                          1. I haven't seen the Dorot frozen herbs and garlic lately, are these still available at TJ's? Also, seems that TJ's only carries a few items over the last few years (garlic, basil and cilantro). Seen others?

Those were a favourite in our home-rare to find frozen 4 ingredient bread. Have you found anything comparable? All I can find is overly processed/with added sugar.

                                                                                                                1. re: ejtait

I did find a fair substitue until I can find the "real Thing" Gelson Market(southern cal.) carries LaBrea Bakery French Rolls (frozen) that need a few minutes in the oven. The ingredients list is comparable. I just prefer the baguette style-I like crust but like the inside better so the baguette works for me.

                                                                                                                  1. re: marti

Those baguettes had the perfect crust/inside combo and seemed to please all. We are on the search--someone mentioned to me that Costco had a similar product and I've asked a friend to check for me (I don't have a membership). I found one brand of frozen baguettes at Whole Foods and our local chain supermarket (Kroger in Ohio) but the ingredient list was long and included added sugar... I gave those a pass.

Both made in France, so maybe there were problems.

I didn't stop to see which kinds, since I have basil and garlic in my tiny freezer already and didn't need anything else.

It really was the best peanut butter. But when it comes to groceries - good, cheap, or consistent - just pick 2.

                                                                                                                        anyone else try it yet?

oh, and i finally just tried the new organic crunchy PB with sea salt. not impressed - the flavor isn't robust enough for me.

                                                                                                                          1. re: goodhealthgourmet

For me, Trader Joe's Organic Valencia was a replacement for East Winds organic peanut butter that inexplicably disappeared from all local store shelves (a distributor issue probably). You can find East Wind online (though their site is down for maintenance and their store site features sandals (and nut butters)). Like the old TJOVPB East Wind tastes like roasted peanuts but it is outrageously expensive.

The new Trader Joe's organic PB tastes peanut-like. NOT a substitute.

I don't like the texture of grind-your-own. I am bummed out.

                                                                                                                            1. re: MplsM ary

try Santa Cruz Organic Dark Roast. IMO it's the best organic PB out there right now. usually runs about 5 bucks a jar, but you can sometimes find it on sale or get a $1 off coupon in those Mambo Sprouts coupon books at natural foods stores. just be sure it's the *Dark* roast.

                                                                                                                        2. No Sweet and Hot Mustard in Boston today :( It was one of my favorite dipping sauces. Maybe someone else has seen some recently?

                                                                                                                            1. re: chez cherie

That may have made some sense when you only killed pigs at certain times of the year but now when almost everything is available year round? Don't think so. It's always "ham season" in my world. BTW I really dislike this mustard on ham but think it's the next best thing ever on potstickers. Best thing ever is the sweet garlic chili sauce that has disappeared and come back enough times that I just buy it whenever I see it.

(really, no org. pb for back to school month? someone wasn't thinking). The new org pb will be made with "red runner" peanuts. Has anyone heard of these?

Total addictive tastiness in microwavable bowl form with a wonderful sauce and plenty of veggies. (bows head and has moment of silence before pressing "post my reply".)

I only read about it - the label was there but the shelf empty last month, and now no label either. This was Burlington MA. I would have liked to try it.....

There's still a shelf sign at my store, and manager says it's TOS (temporarily out of stock), as opposed to d/c (discontinued). They usually give me the straight scoop cuz they know I write Trader Joe's cookbooks (not sold there-- sob!) here are a couple thoughts on why it might be taking so long. First, it's a product of South Africa (why??? Have we no grinders or nibs in the US??) so that might cause a delay. Also, weird stuff gets held up at the ports these days-- a few years ago, capers were TOS for a looong while, waiting for customs clearance. Could be that?? My captain did not have a projected date for their return, but he thinks they will, indeed, be back. Fingers crossed!

The flavor is fine but the grind looks like sidewalk grit so it's not an attractive garnish to a dessert. I kept the container I opened but returned the others. I did buy, but have not yet tried, the "chocolate pearls" - round cousins of jimmies, in a combination of white and dark chocolate colors. Those will make a better-looking decoration.

They were the only one chips with green chillies mixed right in to the chip, not like the powdery garlicky gook (with MSG) I find on most "spicy" chips.

I had picked up a bag of frozen balsamic roasted cippolini onions several months ago that we ended up loving. Then when I thought to go pick some more up earlier this week, there were none in the case and no spot for them. So bummed, they were great as a quick burger topping.

It was in the shorter, plastic jar with the black lids (as opposed to the glass jars). I've not see it my last couple of trips. I asked about it on Monday and was told by an employee that there would be 3 cases in the next day. I stopped in tonight on my way home and saw none on the shelf and the sign where it had been was gone. Such a bummer, loved that stuff. Any recs on which almond butter variety I should try to replace it?

It's been years, but I am still in mourning for the Ginger Jubilee Cake. Sliced thin and toasted it was my go-to pick-me-up with a cup of tea. When it disappeared, I begged them to reveal the source, but all I was told was that it was supposed to have been a rough copy of Dancing Deer gingerbread. While I love DD gingerbread, too, the Ginger Jubilee Cake was nothing like it - lighter, less moist and with crystallized ginger chunks inside. I'm still baking every recipe I can find that seems similar in hopes of recreating it, but so far, not so good.

They were not very high calorie per candy and just a few creamy mint chocolate saucers would satisfy a chocolate craving! I was very disappointed when they only appeared sporadically and more so when they disappeared for good. My latest love is eating their chocolate chocolate chip cookie dough raw, but I haven't been to the store lately (no car) and I am afraid they may stop carrying them, too :-(

I don't know if this is just leftover from a last batch or what, but the only reason why I did not purchase it was it appeared there was only 1 piece of fish (albeit a large piece) in the frozen plastic packaging. You may want to call your local TJ's again and see if for some reason they are back in stock...

All of it. Char is farmed using an inland-pen method that is better for the environment and the fish.

                                                                                                                                                          2. Milk Chocolate Butter Biscuits - they were actually French thin crisp butter cookies with a milk chocolate coating. Delicious and cheap, and although I have found them with another packaging at a gourmet store, they are charging 3x what TJ's charged for them.

The price is a lot higher though than they were at TJ's - $3.99/box.

No, I'm in Maine, where we're lucky to have a TJs (it's only been here a year). But if I'm ever near a Fresh Market, I'll grab them!

I saw them today. No dark chocolate, and not even a sign indicating that they might exist. Tragic. So I consoled myself with dark chocolate covered peppermint Jo-Jos.

Yay for the return of the milk chocolate butter biscuits, but for you I will through out a "nay" for their decision (at least right now) to not bring back the dark chocolate ones!

Just found out today that the pink label tuna has officially been discontinued due to low sales - chunk light tuna in water with no salt. All they have left now is Albacore (high mercury and tasteless) in various packings and chunk light packed in oil, which is greasy and gross. If I'd known it was going out, I would have bought a pallet. Not sure where to buy my tuna anymore...WF is so expensive...

The item I miss the most is the frozen prik king green beans. Used to make it quite often as a quick and VERY tasty side dish. And while I've experimented with making my own from scratch since the product was discontinued, it takes twice as long, requires several ingredients, and I haven't quite nailed the flavor yet.

Another thing I just thought of: vegetable gyoza. Used to buy them all the time--made a great lunch. They currently carry "Vietnamese vegetarian dumplings" but the flavor is 1/10 as good. And the vegetable gyoza I can get frozen at local Japanese markets is also not as good as what TJ's used to have. *sigh.*

                                                                                                                                                                      1. I miss the meyer lemon cake mix (they haven't had it in a couple of years). Also they had a great chocolate baton that they stopped carrying. My current heartbreak is the frozen arctic char. I've tried their other frozen fish and so far meh.

That's what I did -- they didn't know anything about it, and I told them it was available in Los Angeles stores, and asked them if we (here in Las Vegas) were in the same distribution channel. They said they were, looked it up*, and ordered it. I suspect the Bay Area may be a different distribution channel, so it may not be on their list.

The reason to consider only wild fish is because of the conditions on factory farms, and frankly, the better taste of fish who lived a natural life as opposed to one designed for consumption.

They FINALLY got salmon patties back in stock a couple of weeks ago after maybe a year. My kids ate a ton of those things. Unfortunately, they seem smaller and more expensive. Also the salmon does seem to be a higher quality than the previous patties. They tasted wonderful and the kids gobbled them up. They come in a four pack.

Chile Spiced Pineapple is gone. They said it was discontinued in October. I had stocked up with a bunch of it around then so only found out last week that it was gone. I thought maybe if I bought a lot at once that it *wouldn't* be discontinued (because they'd think it was a popular item), so I guess that doesn't work.

Sigh...

(the good news in those cases is that they'll eventually bring it back if they can find another source.)

So I guess when they do that, either the replacement items, or ones that were previously in, say, the lowest 15--25 percentile, then become the lowest 10--15% and get dropped.

As I've said before, I just can't get my head around this concept.

When's the last time you walked into a Safeway with the same feeling?

It can happen for them to bring something back!

Still no sign of my lemongrass shrimp curry, and now the delicious Khao Soi has disappeared, too!

Man-o-man, I actually keep a list of stuff they have discontinued on me. My son laughs at my Trader Joe's curse. He laughed, that is, until they discontinued his sour pickles.

                                                                                                                                                                                                              1. Spicy Thai Veggie Pizza
                                                                                                                                                                                                              2. Nectarine Preserve (I like tart, and that was the only preserve I had found that had a bite to it...It was manna when making PB&J w/ the discontinued peanut butter)
                                                                                                                                                                                                              3. Ginger Joe Joes (as well as their Lemon cookies).
                                                                                                                                                                                                              4. And last, but not least, their most evil concoction: The white chocolate chip cookies

I could continue, but those are the big ones....

And now... Their Ginger & Almond Cluster cereal has been out of stock for a couple of weeks...

                                                                                                                                                                                                              *sigh*

                                                                                                                                                                                                              1. Sadly, here to report that my local TJ's manager said the delicious Chicken, Barley, and Vegetable soup in the refrigerator/prepared foods section has now been discontinued. He recommended that I try the chicken and (vegetable or noodle? not sure which one, but the carton looked light yellow) soup in a small carton on the soup/broth aisle. Even though I know of their great return policy, honestly I didn't want the hassle of making it and possibly taking it back unless I have heard others have positive reviews of it.

Is there another TJ's product discontinued link that I should be using that is newer? I see that this one now says "old", but couldn't locate a newer link. Thanks in advance!

I really miss the Mexican Hot Cocoa cookies, I think they only had them one Christmas and they never came back... Also, a real "blast from the past" - the Sundried Tomato Bread. That bread made the BEST grilled cheese sandwiches! The Sundried Tomato Seasoning was a fixture in my pesto pasta salad; they had that for years before it suddenly bit the dust. Oh, and my most recent sadness is the loss of the Blue Granite blue veined jack cheese, I have to buy a similar cheese at Sprouts now.
