Fabulous fried dough: Hojuelas con miel
Hojuelas are large, thin crisp discs of fried dough that are drizzled with honey. They are similar to Mexican bunuelos. They are a bit sturdier than bunuelos
These were in large plastic bags that vendors were selling on the beach in Guatemala for five quetzales (a little over 50 cents). The vendor had a bottle of miel attached to his belt like a gun and drizzled it over the top.
Miel also means syrup. Whatever was drizzled on it seemed thinner than honey. This recipe says it is brown sugar syrup
Other than at the beach, I haven’t seen them sold many other places.
This wraps up any new Guatemalan foods I tried during my year in Guatemala.
