Hello Memphis chowhounds! The AAU 7th grade basketball nationals are in your city for a week, starting June 26. Our team is flying in on June 25.

The boys are big eaters and ready for BBQ, fried catfish, and anything else that they should eat while in your great city.

Can you please post your suggestions for where to eat? We don't know their schedule yet, but are open to breakfast, lunch, dinner, buffet, you-name-it!

Thank you so much!

Joyce

I'm assuming you're mainly looking for places near the hotel / basketball games. Do you know where those are ? That might be helpful in narrowing down options.

Ha! I'm so used to traveling for great food I forgot to post this. Thanks for asking! We don't know when or where our games are yet, but the team is staying at:

Homewood Suites by Hilton Southwind - Hacks Cross
      3583 Hacks Cross Road

Huey's is a local burger joint that is good, affordable, and very kid friendly. There is one located very close to your hotel on Winchester just west of Hack's Cross.

Germantown Commissary is probably the closest BBQ place, but it's very small and you might have trouble getting every in at the same time.

Leonard's BBQ is relatively close and has a buffet that features both catfish and BBQ. I'm not a big fan of buffets, but I will eat at this place.

Garibaldi's pizza is another local place with good food that does real well with groups of kids. There is one located in Germantown not too far from the hotel.

Southwind Fish on Winchester, right around the corner from your hotel, is good for catfish.

Echo the Huey's rec. The kids will love being able to shoot frill picks into the ceiling with straws.

If you post the tourney location, we can give you information about the area.

For catfish and good southern sides, look at Soul Fish in the shopping center at Poplar and Forest Hill-Irene.

Ditto Soul Fish. 5 minute drive. Also in that area, Mellow Mushroom or Russo's for pizza (both at Forest Hill-Irene and Poplar).

Tourney locations: The game sites were posted today. All in Memphis.

Ridgeway Baptist Church or Ridgew High School (post just says Ridgeway), at 2500 and 2009 Ridgeway Road, respectively.

Riverview Middle School, 247 Majuba Avenue

Wooddale Middle School, 3467 Castleman Street

My stomach is grumbling just thinking of trying out your suggestions. We appreciate your kind ideas!

In the Ridgeway area, I would recommend Memphis Pizza Cafe on Park. Good pizza and good for a team of 13's.

Wooddale is in a pretty not so great part of town. Taqueria La Guadalupana on winchester is not too far from there and is great authentic Mexican that would accomodate your group.

Same for Riverview, except that its fairly close to downtown, which has a variety of great places. Gus' for fried chicken is pretty special and there are other fun things to see downtown. Blues City Cafe on Beale St. has good ribs and tamales.

          Have fun.

Riverview makes Wooddale look like Beverly Hills.

For a special treat, take them to Gibson's Donuts - 760 Mount Moriah Road, Memphis. They have the best donut's I've ever had...and they're open 24 hours a day!

              A quick report back:
Germantown Commisary -- a team favorite. Take-out orders were devoured at the hotel.
Huey's -- another winner. Burgers were great although husband's jalapeno burger came w/o any jalopenos, just a piece of cheese with a little spice in it.
Blues City Cafe -- catfish seemed to be a favorite with my son at this eatery. Much enjoyed by others. Only drawback was the BBQ sauce was sweet only. Husband asked for something with heat and was told sweet was all they served. True?

I couldn't believe no one hit up the donut place, Soul Fish, Leonards' or some of the other recs. The schedule was busy and somtimes the group was en masse -- wanting to eat together, especially at the start of the tourney.

Thank you all again for your suggestions. The kids had a great time and loved your city!

Thanks for the report back and we are glad that you enjoyed your visit to the Bluff City.

There are many BBQ places in town that serve both regular BBQ sauce and hot BBQ sauce, but I'm pretty sure that Blues City serves regular only. His best bet would have been to ask for some extra BBQ sauce and mix it with hot sauce. I know for certain that Blues City has hot sauce.
