Artichoke plants and mulch mat rings...

So I just cut my artichokes all the way back because production slowed down and I am crossing my fingers that maybe I will get a fall harvest since I am already seeing some new offshoots starting. This was my first year with artichokes and I ended up having a pretty good harvest this spring.

Anyway, down to my question... Has anyone ever used plastic mulch mat rings around their artichoke plants? I am wondering if they would work well. I have some around my fruit trees and they seem to work good so far. I was thinking that they would work good on my artichokes plants so that I wouldn't have to spend so much time with weed maintenance. And since I just cut my plants all the way down, now would be a good time to put the mats down around the base if I did decide to use them. Any thoughts?

TIA! Hope everyone has a great weekend!
