Hi, Can anyone suggest a decent halal restaurant in Berkeley with good ambiance?

  1. I love Indus Village, which is Halal Pakistani. The food is great, but the atmosphere is very casual. The restaurant is perfectly clean and the service perfectly friendly (if not extremely attentive), but if you're looking for something fancy or trendy, it probably won't fit the bill.

That said, I don't actually know of any other restaurants in Berkeley that market themselves as Halal.

    1. Indus Village, friendly people ambience better when busy. Inexpensive and the pretty but uncomfortable chairs are gone.

      1. A 3rd on Indus Village. They have a very light touch on food that's easy to bog down. No vague steam table ready stuff here. The prices are great considering the quality.

Hey so when I walk by or go there I notice the patio and tables next door in the lot, is that part of Indus or something else? Eating outside would be great on a nice day.

I don't think it's part of Indus, but I don't know - didn't there used to be a little farm stand that would be set up there on weekends, with good lentils and such? I haven't noticed it for a while.

        2. Turkish Kitchen?
Not Berkeley but close Zaki Kabob House.

Is Zaki Kabob halal? It doesn't mention it on their website. If so, that would be another good pick because the ambiance there is quite pleasant, especially when they have live music on the weekends (though this makes conversation difficult).

In SF (WAY out in SF), I love Old Mandarin Islamic - but it's very much a hole in the wall.

          2. For me, Kabana (also halal Pakistani, around the corner) is an easy choice over Indus Village. Every meal at Kabana is a plate-licker. It has been over a year since I've visited either, however, so things may have changed.
