Keeping Lobsters Alive

Can I keep lobsters alive for 24 hours? I'd have to buy them live on Saturday, but can't cook them until Sunday. Will they survive? How/where should I store them? Thanks!

  1. I've never had to keep them that long before cooking so I was curious as to the answer. Looks like they'll keep just fine bagged and refrigerated:

    1. Per the recommendation of a wholesaler we purchased lobster from in New England, we put the lobsters in the refrigerator drawers and put wet paper towels on top of them. They kept for two days. I believe he said they keep no more than three days.

        I read about it after killing some by mistake a few years ago. Since then, I've also had very good luck putting them in a pan or basket on the bottom shelf in the back of the fridge where it's coldest, covered with wet newspaper. Have kept them two days that way.

      2. I wrap them loosely in wet newspaper and have kept them alive for 36+ hours.

          ditto: run newspaper section under cold water until soaked through, put lobsters in a restaurant pan or tray, cover with newspaper and put in coldest part of your fridge. easily last 24 hours. depending on their condition, i've had 'em last from 2 to 5 days like this.
