  1. My wife and I like it. It's not O Ya, but it's good, and good value.

We almost invariably get a couple of apps and then split the chef's choice sushi/sashimi platter, which typically includes not just a good variety of sushi, sashimi and maki, but also a portion of marinated seafood salad - sort of a Japanese take on ceviche. And once we got to sit next to a supermodel (Tyra Banks), which didn't make the food taste any better but brought a lot of amusing buzz to the place.

The only thing I haven't like there is their fried squid appetizer - it's deep-fried calamari-style, served with a tasty mango-based sauce, but the squid itself was chewy and poorly fried. But then, I'm very particular about my calamari, there aren't many places around that do it well.

    1. P.S. Thanks for pointing this out - I just bought a couple for myself.

bob, thanks to your response,i got 2 as well.(Didn't it surprise you that there were no other posts?).
I also really want to try their 28 different choices- $4.50 maki night (though the coupon won't be usable on this). If you (or any other CHs) ever want to meet up there, email me via my member pg.

      2. Yesterday, I used a coupon and got a few different types of sashimi...salmon, yellowtail and tuna. It was good. The people working there were very nice and welcoming too. I hate when you use one of these coupons and you get an attitude like you're stealing something from them.

        1. we used our coupon tonight. the seaweed salad and age dashi tofu were very nicely done. The latter was perfectly fried and a nice light broth (I cannot for the life of me figure out why Sushi Island, w/ its superior suhi, serves its very weird no-broth age dashi tofu.) and generous portion. The hamachi kama, My Love's go-to, was well enjoyed. I got a large variety of nigiri and maki. I found the product good but far from stellar. A sushi bar that claims to be a sushi bar really HAS to stock gobo and has to serve yama kake; Gari has neither. So that was my first warning. But the major problem appeared when my order arrived and 80% of my items were heavily dolloped with sweet unagi sauce( deep fried maki but also unagi and caterpillar rolls).I can't really explain how horrified i was. I mentioned it to the waitress and the chef heard this and mumbled something but nothing was done so i scraped it off and enjoyed what i could. If you're into rock 'n roll sushi, maybe you'd enjoy it here but I will stick with my trad sushi fixes at Sushi Island.

Interesting - I can't recall ever getting anything there with sweet unagi sauce. But we tend to stick to the raw and marinated items, not cooked ones.

On second thought - I had a tasty salmon tartare (daily special) last time we were there, made with apples and something slightly sweet - might have been unagi, but what ever it was it worked with that dish.
