Great value - go and try it [Segar Restaurant]
took a friend for a birthday dinner - first visit - good service - really tasty food - I had the steakfrites and she had linguine - we both loved our choices. Re apps - had edamame salad - excellent but less 'over the moon' re the crab fritters - maybe expecting too much after reading previous reviews - they are good but not that spectacular. Overall, will definitely be going again - a real find! (And, BTW, it is definitely NOT Indian food)

I've also seen some good reviews. Maybe the place is just inconsistent? I might give it another chance but with so many restaurants to try in Toronto it's rare that I go back if I'm not impressed the first time.

I've been twice and quite liked it - though wasn't knocked out by it. I'd probably go more often if I lived nearby and didn't have to negotiate parking on Bayview Ave., which is patrolled relentlessly by nasty dispensers of $30 tickets. Seems to me the place started out with ambitiously modern south Asian flavorings, but the good burghers of Leaside didn't take to such exotica in the required numbers, and the chef-owner seems to have muted his spice route's distinct offerings. Now the place just hints at mere traces of the original concept. All nicely done, mind, and an attractive room, with good service but, as hal2010 points out, hardly exceptional. Still, the price is comparatively modest (for Bayview Ave.). I recall the fritters appetizer to be particularly tasty. Wine prices can be stiff, though. Add that to the $30 parking ticket and you could conceivably go home from dinner quite cranky - no matter how good the grub is.

Not sure you can blame the parking ticket on Segar.
I usually order the Portuguese red wine - its under $40 (which I find reasonable). Although they also have BYOB (@$20) so that's now my preferred approach.
My only issue has been items out of stock - which I tolerate as it implies freshness.Still one of my neighbourhood go-tos.

Went once and found it to be fairly boring. Mediocre bistro food which didn't exhibit a whole lot of the tastes of the spice route as advertised.
As a general observation, I find the Bayview strip (my neighborhood) to be lacking any really exceptional restaurants. Mediocrity thrives and can be quite successful.

went because of recommendations we found on Chowhound - so where are replies from people who have enjoyed meals at Segar - certainly not saying it's among the top restaurants but thought we got great value for what we paid. Agree that the food was not 'unusual' but was well prepared, attractively served and pretty tasty
