Kansas recommendations
Hi there,
I am flying into Kansas City and then driving out to Concordia, Kansas for a few days for work. I'm hoping to get some recommendations on BBQ institutions and anything else you want to throw at me. I much prefer holes in the wall to chains, but any insight would be appreciated as I have no knowledge of the area at all.
Cheers!

On the way to or from Concordia, stop in Junction City for an excellent Korean meal. My favorite is Pusan, on Washington Street (the main drag). Also highly recommended is Korean Garden on Grant, a road to nearby Fort Riley. Both inexpensive. Both as good as anything you can get in San Francisco or Los Angeles.

We tried to eat lunch at Pusan this past Monday and discovered that they are closed on Sunday and Monday. We then drove to Korean Garden and saw that they are open evenings only. We will get to at least one of them during our two week stay in Abilene.
Last night, we discovered a new (open a month) Abilene restaurant. Joe Snuffy's Old Fashion Grill is at 209 NW 1st - just west of Buckeye. Chicken fried steak with two sides and salad was $6.99 - great road food type place. He had operated the restaurant at the bowling alley for ten years before relocating.

re: Milt
Yesterday, we ate lunch at Shamrock Cafe on Old US 40 in downtown Chapman. We were there to see the new high school building. Three years ago, we were visiting in Abilene when a tornado destroyed much of Chapman (and passed right over our home {Yes, we were in the basement}). Two years ago, we ate at the Shamrock just after they had reopened. The meal was good last time and very good this time. I had the daily special - pulled pork and gravy over rice, corn, dinner roll, and iced tea for $6.05 and my wife had a hamburger with all the trimmings for $5.86. She said the burger was just as good as it was over forty years ago when she occasionally ate at the Shamrock while in high school.
For dessert, I ordered butterscotch pie ($2.99) and it was quite good. If it wasn't made in house - it was made nearby in someone's house.

re: Milt
Our neighbor across the street who, like my wife is a Cobb County teacher born in Salina, has encouraged us to visit Martinelli's on our upcoming trip. She assures us that we will love it as much as Bogey's, which we found from her recommendation last year.

Lawrence - Free State Brewery has excellent food and, of course, their brews.
Abilene - The Hitching Post in Old Abilene Town is popular with locals for breakfast and lunch. Mr. K's Farmhouse is popular with locals for dinner.
Salina - Cozy Inn has been serving small burgers since 1922. Buy a sack of six. Bogey's, on 9th Street, is in an old gas station - serving burgers, hot dogs, and shakes.
Assaria - Renaissance Cafe is fine dining in an old two story schoolhouse.
Smolan - Hickory Tree Restaurant serves a bbg buffet in an old two story schoolhouse.
Lincoln - Hungry Hunter is THE place to eat in Lincoln.

If you are with a group, the Brookville Hotel (which is now in Abilene) is a much loved fried chicken institution in central Kansas: http://www.brookvillehotel.com/

Are you interested in KC places, or just Concordia places, or everywhere along the way? -
Here are two places we tried a month or so ago while visiting KC, Kansas (not Missouri) and enjoyed tremendously:
The Woodyard BBQ - http://www.woodyardbbq.com/menu.htm (try the "burnt ends" chili
)Oklahoma Joe's BBQ - http://www.oklahomajoesbbq.com/restau...
I'd recommend them both very highly.
