birthday for an ecclectic group of 10

My birthday is coming up in August and I'm going to do a dinner out with 10 close friends. The group is ecclectic- a good number of them don't have too much money. Some have money, travel a lot, eat at fancy restaurants. Does anyone have a suggestion of a fun and festive place where everyone will be happy? I'd love to find a great BYOB place, but I don't like La Sirene or Ivo and Lulu. BYOB is not a priority though. Great food and festive atmosphere, where $50 or $60 a head is the maximum. Thanks for any suggestions!

  1. Gazala's on the UWS could be an option for your group: http://gazalaplace.com/

Thanks, that place looks wonderful. It seems like it may not be very festive in atmosphere. I do want something that feels a little festive. It's a big birthday this year. I know it's hard to find something that feels special but isn't too expensive. But I'm going to check Gazala's out, it looks great.

Just curious, what didn't you like about La Sirene? Was it too small? That might help us narrow down our recommendations since there are several places that could meet your criteria (e.g. Jean Claude, Shorty's .32, Empellon, Rubirosa, etc.)

Hi Riverman, You seem to have some good bday suggestions. I'm wondering whether you've got anymore? I'm having a bday dinner with 8 friends next Saturday but am hoping to keep the price at $20/head. I know that's not much to work with but I'd feel bad asking some of my friends (in grad school) to spend more. Byob would be awesome, but I doubt it will happen... I actually ate at La Sirene last night and had a great meal. Loved the atmosphere.

If you're willing to share appetizers and desserts, I think that Rubirosa, Otto, Gennaro, Petite Abeille, Kefi, Ali Baba, Turkish Kitchen, Kyotofu or Hung Ry might work for you.

If you don't mind a very casual venue, South China Garden is great for Cantonese. You could also go to Zabb Elee for Thai, then maybe Spot to share a few desserts.
