  • janie Jun 14, 2011 04:23 PM

Anyone know about this gyro grill that looks like it's going to open soon...on corner of woodhaven near to where London Lennie's is, and where a bunch of places have never lasted at that spot? Noticed it driving by last night, new awning up...sure would be great if it was a good place with some healthy salads as well....anybody in Middle village or rego park know anything ???

  1. I passed it this morning my self. My Drs, office is around the corner. It use to be a deli didnt last long and before that a tuxedo shop? It looks like it is still under construction. I tried to go to the web site but all thats there is to make a comment.

    1. Its actually set to open next thursday, and the store now looks pretty amazing. There will definitely be salads, and they're are a 4-5 different ones, though they are definitely not what the store will be specializing in. By the looks of it, it really is going to be quite a good place to grab a quick meal during lunch time, or a quick and delicious dinner.

thanks so much for the update, will check it out next week...!

      2. Grand opening was today. This place has awesome gyros and the tzatziki sauce is great. I checked this place out after driving by on my commute to Manhattan. We also had their burger and fries (waffle fries, yum). The prices are decent and the staff is very friendly. Its great to have a gyro place on this side of Queens. Highly recommended!

        1. i placed a delivery order from the new Gyro Grill on woodhaven. this was my first experience ever with them and it was sort of embarrassing as I was ordering while i had company over. the order was for two gyro's, two sides of sweet potato fries, moussaka, and spinach pie. it wasn't exactly what i expected. i expected the gyros to be in some form of a sandwich with pita, lettuce, tomato, perhaps some onions and white sauce. but they came in foil containers with half gyro meat and half sweet potato fries. the meat was tasty, but it was all by itself, literally just meat and sweet potato. the fries were soggy, undercoked and very disappointing. i ended up having to excuse myself from my guests and fry them in my wok with salt and pepper. even worse, the gyros and fries were for my two guests. anyway, my moussaka was absolutely delicious. i was very happy with the flavor, and the spinach pie was nice as well. although the food itself wasn't all in all bad, i'd have to say the quality and effort may be lacking from this place. i might consider giving them a try again one day, but certainly not for delivery.

Fries are never good delivered. But good to know about the other less offending items. I go to Woodhaven House a lot, maybe I'll stop by this place next time for a bite instead.

I tried this place a couple of times and it is decent. I'm sure I'll be back because it's the only Greek place in this neighborhood. We tried the pork souvlaki, chicken souvlaki, gyro, and lemon potatoes. I will say the gyro and lemon potatoes are top notch. For souvlaki, I will stick with Astoria. They also have chicken gyro, but I haven't tried it. The place looks nice for a fast food type place and the prices are low. I recommend it.

Gyro Grill Woodhaven - ate there last week. Very nice friendly management, almost zero atmosphere, but clean, French doors for a kind of alfresco dining -- now to the food -- good falafel, good beef/lamb gyro (small portion of meat for $3 is actually huge, incredible bargain) piece de resistance - Greek PASTITSIO - absolutely amazing - béchamel tasted like it was made by angels! Counter guys say the spinach pie is great, too. They were all out... Can't wait to try!!!

if you have the spinach pie, please report back as to the size because it was $6 when my husband checked, and he didn't want to pay that...when they are between $3-4.50 elsewhere--thanks

                  1. re: janie

Their spinach pie was a square about 5x5 or 6x6. I thought it was a decent size for the price.

When I placed this order I didn't have the menu. I just knew some of the items they had available after hearing about it from some neighbors. Now that I have the menu, I see I was overcharged and was not given the side dishes that my order came with. Spent $46 on my messed up order as described above. Now I'm even unhappier about my order.

            3. Three of the four people who posted favorable comments on Gyro Grill were making their first post ever to CH. And none of them have ever posted again. If any of you ever come back to CH can you tell us how this compares to nearby places like Wafa's, Corfu, or even Corona Gyro and Pizza?

oh, didn't realize that....:) my husband just grabbed a menu and ran out...he was in a rush--but he said the place didn't look like much--and the price of the spinach pie (which is what he gets to eat with a salad, didn't thrill him)---but, would like to know if any other longtime posters have been..thanks, el jefe

I think Gyro Grill is way better than Corfu, which I never really cared much for in the first place. I love Wafa's, but I haven't ordered anything from gyro grill that is also done by Wafa, except for the stuffed grape leaves. As expected, Wafa's are much better. So far, all I've had from GG is the pork souvlaki and the gyro platters. Liked the souvlaki, loved the gyro..it was much crisper and more flavorful than other gyros I have had in a long time. My wife loves their mousakka, which I have tasted, and I have to agree that it is very good.

                2. Had take-out from here about 2 weeks ago. VERY, very good! We got several items for the family to sample. The lamb kabobs with roasted vegetables were very good, as were the stuffed grape leaves, the mousaka, hummus, and tzatziki. My favorite, though, was the spinach pie. Best I've ever had.
