Restaurants & Bars links appear and disappear

Melanie Wong Jun 14, 2011 01:31 PM

Haven't seen this bug for a while, place links (nor the map) are not displaying on threads for the last couple days. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't. This was a problem in the past, was resolved, and is happening again.

I have reason to believe that this problem may have been caused by a site-wide bug that was fixed last week. Is anyone still getting the randomly vanishing/reappearing auto-linking and "Places mentioned"?

It happened to me yesterday with this thread http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/796740 on a PC running XP Home Edition and the latest version of FF. First nothing in the way of links. I then refreshed the browser a couple of times. Nothing. I then signed out and back in to CH. Nothing. Finally one more browser refresh and everything was back where is should have been.

To clarify; did the links / "Places Mentioned" information appear at first, go missing, and then come back? Or did they simply take 10-15 minutes to show up after you first posted?

If the former, then the problem has not been resolved and I need to head back to the drawing board.

If the latter, then you unfortunately experienced an unrelated problem. The two halves of the site tend to kick and scream a bit when we ask them to play nice together. This results in things like "Places Mentioned" and comments on Recipe pages taking forever to show up / update. Fortunately, this problem should eventually be addressed by our ongoing infrastructure upgrades.

This was later in the day (several hours later) after I first posted, plus others had posted also, place links. I went home and looked at the thread on a completed unrelated computer to the one I first used to post and "no links" showed. Then I went through the steps I outlined above and finally they "popped" into view.

That's unfortunate. Thank you for the information; we'll keep looking.

I just posted a reply on an Amalfi thread today (Italy) and added some links when reintering and editing my post.
              they did not stick.

Hi Jen. I see the last post in that thread which is by you and has a link in your post Torre del Saraceno and then you have another longer post above that one in reply to someone else that has an "active link" showing for San Pietro.

right but I had also suggested visiting ravello and added two restaurant suggestions for that town. as well as a link for A''Paranza in Atrani - and none of those links ever showed up. Its bad enough that only one link can be added per edit but then when they evaporate also...

Odd how inconsistent it seems to be acting at present. We'll look into it, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Just to be sure: you're referring just to the items that are meant to appear in the column on the right hand side, yes? The auto-linking of restaurant names in posts is working normally?

Auto-linking may be working, but in the threads where none of the links show even in older posts that displayed them previously, I can't tell. That is, the links embedded in posts, the links at the bottom of a post, and the ones on the righthand side do not display from time-to-time.

Also, since yesterday, I'm noting more application errors with board indices and threads not loading. They will come up after an attempt or two to refresh. Server shortage?

Looks like they both fail in tandem; for some reason the restaurants aren't being identified and neither feature can do anything with them. We're now tracking this bug; thank you for the information.

As for the application errors and pages failing to load, is this restricted to the forums, or is it happening elsewhere on CHOW as well?

I haven't opened many CHOW pages in the last couple days to notice a problem there. I've noticed it mainly on the discussion boards and mainly with the board indices, e.g. California Board.

Melanie, thank you (probably for the umpteenth time over the years) for posting about this weird, vexing and variable problem. I will link restaurants manually, and they show up fine when I finish. I then go back later and "poof" gone! What I've noticed at times is that, if I add one of the same ones that disappeared, that the others that also were gone come back with the re-add of the first disappeared one. Also weird, but at least that saves me some time in getting the links back... (g)
