Top Notch in Positano or Ravello?

  • 3

Hi Chowhounders,

Looking to get a gift certificate for foodie friends honeymooning in Positano and Ravello in a few weeks. Any top notch restaurants in either of these places to look into? Is Don Alfonso super far from Positano? Is Donna Rosa good? Where else? I don't even know where to begin...

TIA!

  1. There is a lot of info on this board if you search - or even just click on the posts down below this response under Italy board discussions. You will find a lot surving around or looking on the Restaurant Page. There are some discussions of Ravello restauants here - probably the end of the thread would be of most interest to you.

    1. I have a post somewhere on here where I wrote up a few of the places in Positano and Ravello, along with some other places along that stretch of the Amalfi coast - might be worth a search. Jen is right, there's loads of info about the area on here. I actually expected Donna Rosa to disappoint but it was great. We loved the pasta assortment (they maybe called it a Fantasia of Pasta? or Pasta Mista... something like that), and I want to say we also had a scallop gratinee that was very nice. The main we had was forgettable, but I still think its worth a stop (however it wasn't our favorite of the trip). It WAS probably the fanciest place we went on the trip. Don Alfonso is a bit of a ways away, but if they will have a car it shouldn't be a problem. Cumpa Cosimo in Ravello was very enjoyable (also great Pasta Mista), as was Il Ritrovo next door to Donna Rosa, and Il Barilotto del Nonno near Positano, but they may not be fancy enough. Nearby, we loved Acquapazza in Cetara and A Paranza in Atrani (we actually hiked down the hill here from Ravello, so it's pretty close). Neither are Don Alfonso fancy, but the last two were a bit more dressed up than average.

WOW .. that is a hard choice. You did not mention how much you wanted to spend, so that is relevant as well. If I were going to really give someone a gift, I would buy them dinner at Le Sirenuse Hotel in Positano ... the diningroom with hundreds of candles and seaside view is to die for ... so beautiful ... I've been to Positano several times (with family, friends, etc.) and have stayed there and elsewhere. When we've stayed elsewhere in town, we have stopped in at Le Sirensure and enjoyed the drinks on the patio and then proceeded on to other spots for dinner. The view is breathtaking! The dinner restaurant, however, is atmosphere to the max. Magical place. The food is excellent also ... BUT ... when I am on the Amalfi coast, I think the real memorable meals are those at more casual, authentic, out-of-the way spots -- Il Ritrovo, Ristorante Santa Croce in Nocelle (up the hill from Positano) or the ones mentioned by emilie above in Cetara and Atrani, which is a bit of a drive away. Search this board, and then check out the websites and see what you think. You are a nice friend!
