Hangar B Chatham Airport Cape Cod
I recently posted a thread titled "Keltic Kitchen....Best B'Fast on Caoe Cod! As good as that meal was I stand corrected. I enjoyed quite possibly the best breakfast in my life this past Saturday. It was my second visit, but I guess I just didn't get it the first time around, partly due to ordering too plainly and partly due to sitting far away from the open kitchen to witness first hand the spectacular goodness coming out of the cramped space. I also didn't know the "story" at the time.
A little background. The former head chef from The Chatham Bars Inn, Brian Erskine decided to open his own place, a small hole in the wall on the second floor in the middle of nowhere and do it serving only breakfast and lunch, with limited hours of 7-2 Wed-Sun. He appears to be in his mid thirtees and the place has a shabby chic look to it, furnished with funky formica tables and chairs overlooking large windows with views of the small airstrip at Chatham Airport. A large blackboard lists the specials, like the hangar steak and eggs with "Bulldog" sauce $14, Smoked salmon and goat cheese omelet $12, pulled pork bbq tacos $11 and the day's house made donut which looked yummy (but I forget the ingredients, potato and something) There were other housemade baked goods like various fruity muffins and even a house granola.
We arrived at 10 am and had to wait outside for a table for about 15 minutes. It was a raw and chilly day but someone came right out and offered us hot cups of their organic Chatham Roasters cofee. Delish. Once seated I was originally disappointeted in our lone table which was nerxt to the door and practically inside the busy and cramped open kitchen. As it turned out, it was a great place to sit as we could see every dish first hand as it came off the small grill or stovetop that Chef Brian worked flawlessly. The attention to detail here is what impresses. Real Maple syrup is standard. All the juices are fresh squeezed. Soft cremery butter and housemade raspberry jam is served for the perfectly toasted sourdough. Our party had an eggs benny ($14) with perfect poached eggs and a very light hollandaise. The Red Flannel Hash is a house specialty made from bacon, beets, sweet potatoes, red onions, red bliss potatoes and topped with horseradish crème fraiche. It's an achievement in and of itself. The French Toast ($12) is made with a rich and flavorful brioche bread pudding that is cut into a huge wedge and fried in butter. My choice was the lemon ricotta pancakes and all I can say is Heaven! The order consists of three plate sized fluffy and creamy, sweet and tart pancakes topped with fresh blueberries, strawberries, and plump blackberries. Oh so good for $10.
It's been suggested that we don't speak of it here on the board for fear it might get too busy for those of us in the know. I understand that sentiment completely! This is a rare Chowish find for the Cape.
It's not cheap, but never once do you feel you aren't getting what you pay for. There's a nice kids menu and highchairs available so it's very family friendly. Service was efficient and friendly. People looked happy serving up terrific food to an appreciative audiience. And why not? It's breakfast nirvana.
