Hi fellow CH-ers! How can you tell if buttermilk is still good to use?
Don't worry, Taz, you'll know when it's bad. It will smell like sour milk. Buttermilk is tangy, but has a sweet milk smell.
It will eventually mold, but that takes a long time, at least 4-6 weeks. Open it up and smell/take a look; if it's still uniformly white and smells sour but not moldy/funky, you're good to go. (And be sure to shake it before using!)
And, if you keep it in a glass milk bottle and shake it from time to time, it can last for months past the sell-by date. I never have a problem.
