Soft Shell Crab in Westchester

menton1 Jun 13, 2011 07:50 AM

Now that this is in season, any places that do a good preparation of this delicacy?

Cubanat, I had not tried Bao's in years as I was not impressed with them in the first place. But, I was very impressed on this visit. I had a "light" (their word) version of chicken with ginger & garlic (less sodium too), and my companion had one of those large bowls of soup which he (and I) enjoyed tremendously, it had BBQ pork and basically the kitchen sink in it and we got about 3 meals out of it later on! We started out with the chicken soong (in lettuce leaf wraps) and I wanted to lick the plate clean, it was so flavorful. My companion is not a seafood lover, otherwise I would have ordered the SSC.

So I was off today, and since the weather was great, I called Day Boat in Irvington at Noon to ask if they had SSC. The girl who answered said "Yes!". Then I asked how they are prepared, and she said in a sandwich. Great.

So we arrived there at about 1:30, were seated, and we noticed no specials, not on the menu. When we asked the waiter, he looked puzzled, and went off inside, and then said that they had no SSCs, they wouldn't have any. Aaargh!! The owner/manager came out, and said something about that "they didn't deliver any this week". So why did the girl say that you had them only 1 hour ago!!!!!! And these new restaurants wonder why they go belly up!

We left, and decided to go to Half Moon because of the much better view right on the water. And guess what? They had SSCs on the menu as a special!!! And they were prepared perfectly in a nice baguette sandwich. Just lightly fried. Some days, serendipity is taking good care of you...

      Day Boat Cafe? Bah humbug.

Oh no! Hearing this makes me so sad!!! But I am glad you got some SSC in the long run. I have never been to Half Moon b/c I had heard very mixed opinions. Would you share your thoughts?

I hesitate because I have often given 5 star reviews here to Half Moon. I think the prices are quite reasonable, the environment, inside and outside, is gorgeous, the outside patio is smack on the river. Food is quite good, everything from burgers to full fledged entrees. They do get slammed on summer weekends. Better on weekdays. Yesterday was sublime. And the SSC sandwich, at $15, was prepared perfectly and was wonderful.

Bao's Chinese Restaurant in the "mini mall" in White Plains had it as a blackboard special a week or two ago.

Diva, Is it me or did Bao's go way downhill 2 or 3 years ago?

It has gone downhill in the last year. Very inconsistent.

When they have them on the menu, the SSC's at North are to die for. I have also enjoyed them tremendously at Day Boat Cafe in Irvington. I really love them!!

I was thinking of Day Boat Cafe. Not on the website menu, but they have them now?

don't laugh but I'd call ahead to double check at both places since they are subject to market.

June and Ho (Rye, Purchase St.) used to do a SSC sandwich lunch special on delicate pumpernickel bread-- haven't had it in a couple of years. Was very fresh and tasty.

Thanks, but I was looking for an actual restaurant to indulge in this dish in..
