Best Pizza in Portland

j
jpc8015 Jun 12, 2011 11:44 PM

A couple of months back Portland Monthly Magazine did a write up of "the best" pizza places in Portland.

http://www.portlandmonthlymag.com/eat...

There are several links on the right hand side of the web page that go into their favorite crust, their favorite toppings, PDX originals, etc...

My wife loves pizza and could eat it every day. So I ask the Chowhouns community, what is your favorite pizza? Better yet, what is your favorite pizza on the east side?

Firehouse makes some really great pizza as well. Served hot with no attitude.

I love Apizza Scholls but will never go there on a weekend night...too crowded. I go on weeknights only. No slices, whole pies only, btw. Great caesar salad.

I also like Al Forno Ferruzza, but I usually eat a calzone there because they make their own ricotta and they are awesome, good pizza and salad too, but OMG the calzones!

Though I almost always go for the blistered thin crust variety of pizza, I really love Dove Vivi with their thick yet crisp cornmeal crust that makes for a kind of deep dish pizza. Nice salads there too.

I have not had one there, but I have seen many go by while there and Nostrana also seems to do a great pizza. This a casual but finer dining restaurant (that I adore) but their pizza is very popular (and available at a late night happy hour for a great deal).

Another decent pie with interesting seasonal choices can be found at Lovely's Fifty Fifty...good ice cream there too.

These are ALL on the east side, btw.

I am a seriously picky pizza person originally from Brooklyn, NY...YMMV.

We really like the pizza at Escape From New York. I want to try Lovely's Fifty Fifty, especially since we loved Lovely Hula Hands so much. :)

We are from out of town, and tried Apizza Scholls based on seeing it on Anthony Bordain's No Reservations. It was very very good. It was a Friday night close to closing and only 15 minute wait. The vegetable appetizer was also really good.

Right there with you re: Apizza Scholls & Dove Vivi, JillO! Apizza Scholls is, IMHO, hands down, the best pizza in town. Ken's and Nostrana don't hold a candle to Apizza Scholls.

Another delicious find is Pyro Pizza - AMAZING $7.00 pie out of a food cart, for god's sake! $8 if you want a generous topping of Otto's (local) pepperoni! (See pix below)

good to see someone get it right re: Apizza.

no one else in town is even playing the same game!? In fact, there are only a couple other places in the entire country that are worthy of mentioning in the same sentence with Apizza Scholls....and they are Pizzeria Bianco, Uno Napalitano, Sally's.

We are on the same page regarding pizza, nkeane. Had the good fortune to dine at Bianco twice in the past year and once at Uno Napolitano (sp?) before the chef packed up and moved to SF. Have yet to try Di Fara's in Brooklyn...heard that is really good too. But I digress.

Have you been to Pyro's Pizza? Damn good for $7!

re:Pyro: of course. also good is WyEast. also a cart, a little more $ but a much larger pizza.

back to Apizza for a second.....if it's been a while since you have been, go back and try their new house made Canadian bacon! I highly recommend it(although not on the Pig & Pineapple pizza that is on the menu.....fruit on pizza is an abomination, and gets treated as nuclear waste.). have it added to a Margarita!

The place that I like to go for pizza in Portland is Gladstone Pizza.

Totally with you! It seems to be a bit of an unknown treasure. The guy who runs it is certainly an interesting personality, but the pizza is damn good, and you can tell he knows what's up. Bonus points for a nice patio in the back (and being next to a pub, for afterwards).
