Cheap Chinatown combos

Howdy,

Been away for awhile, and was wondering what's the status of those super cheap combo joints
you find scattered about Broadway.

Aren't all the combos in Chinatown ... cheap?

Change is near glacial in Chinatown. Were you referring to places like Yum Cha Cafe?

Yum Cha Cafe is a gem for what it does -- good, inexpensive dim sum -- but to my knowledge does not do cheap combos, which I take to mean soup + entree + rice at about $6.

That said, I love Yum Cha. I buy two orders of the baked pork buns for about $3 including tax. I put one in the microwave for 30 sec -- mine is pretty high-powered, more makes the buns flop into nothing. 30 sec gets one hot throughout, steaming within, and the bun still has some integrity.

Their crispy shrimp balls also survive the trip home and the rewarming pretty well. The egg rolls and the shu mai not so much.

Specifically, the place on the river side of BW that serves combos for $4, plus a few dim sum items (steamed bao, shui mai, shrimp/scallop har gow, sticky rice). As I recall from years ago you posted about several similar places, where old chinese folks go to get cheap stuff.

Oh, OK. Soon Peace on Ord changed its name to Keung Kee but the format is the same. Likewise Tai Wong on New High is still churning out the rock bottom cheap stuff.

Tried Tai Wong today. You're right about rock bottom prices. It was pretty good. They have a great deal on baked char sui baos after 3PM. 3 for a $1.00.
