Soft Shell Crab cravings

dunehole Jun 10, 2011 01:49 PM

I know Soft Shell Crab is in season right now, but not sure who is serving it and doing it well. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get some delicious soft shell crab, preferably in the near East Bay but will travel a little bit.

If you're willing to put in a little effort to pan fry them yourself, Monterey Fish has them (though call ahead to be sure) for $3.50 each and they will even clean them.

Cafe 15 does a very good soft shell crab sandwich as a special some days. They had one on the menu about 2 weeks ago. You can check the daily specials on twitter.

Prospect in San Francisco has soft shell crab on the menu right now:
Crispy Softshell Crab – tomatillo, bacon, spring onion aioli

It's listed as an appetizer, but you can get all their appetizers entree sized if you ask.

I've seen them in the past at Lucky Seafood in Oakland Chinatown...but you'll have to check. They also hae a 2nd location on 12th St.

Thanks, I saw the Lalimes special this morning, but I was thinking more low-brow, like fried Soft Shells etc. I think I may be out of luck.

There are quite a number of of sushi rolls that include soft shells like Ace Wasabi's Spider Roll: Spider soft shell crab, avocado, lettuce . Low brow enough?

Typically that's made w frozen crab though.

Assuming "low key" to be less expensive then the frozen would be the way to go. Live are going to be more expensive. Example Prospect's appetizer is 50% more than the spider roll.
