nashville vietnamese

  • 5

hey all -

I recently moved to Nashville and I'm a big fan of southeast asian cuisine, especially vietnamese. I noticed several vietnamese places on Charlotte Pike during my trips out to the mall at Nashville west - has anybody tried any of these? Any good? What's the best? Are there any other Viet places clearly ahead of the pack?

Speaking of SE Asian food in Nashville, I want to put in a plug for Thai Phooket on Woodland, just across the river in East Nashville. Very solid thai food served in a double-wide trailer (!), reasonable prices.

  1. In my opinion, the best Vietnamese in Nashville is Kien Giang. I've tried almost all of them, and I think KG is head and shoulders above the others. In fact, the highest praise I can give is that I went to Saigion earlier this year, and the food at Kien Giang (especially the pho) was every bit as good as what I had in Vietnam.

    1. I'll second Jamie's rec for Kien Giang, just a few quick notes: they only take cash, and I believe they are closed on Mondays. I've sampled a fair bit of their menu and I can easily say that's far better than most other places in Nashville.

Miss Saigon is located in the same giant shopping strip/parking lot, the menu is quite a bit larger and slightly more expensive than KG.

If you're looking for just a decent bowl of pho on the south side, I've always enjoyed Vinh-Long on the corner of Thompson & Murfreesboro.

Since you mentioned Thai, make a trip to Antioch and try out King Market. It's actually more Lao than Thai, but all the offerings are the best in town imho.

      1. Agreed on Thai Phooket. I hope they can hang on there; restaurants come and go in that spot all the time.

        1. I'll third Kien Giang. It's located in the same little shopping center up a hill off Charlotte as Miss Saigon, K&S World Market, and Lucky Bamboo, though it's to your left when entering the parking lot. Moved here last summer and was told that Charlotte Pike was the place for good Vietnamese but when we went out to get dinner one night I couldn't remember the name of the one everyong kept mentioning was the best. Tried one down the street on Charlotte instead and it was okay but nothing special. We were better prepared next time, went to Kien Giang, and now that's basically the only Vietnamese place we go to out here. As good as any of the best Vietnamese places in Chinatown or Fields Corner in Boston (if that happens to mean anything to you). Hard to keep myself from ordering pho, but got a bun (one of the pork ones I believe) once and it was good, and my wife like the banh xeo she got one time as well. Highly recommended. And as previously mentioned it is cash only and it is closed on Mondays (this is the one time we tried Miss Saigon, which we liked as well).

Another vote for Kien Giang- I love their bun with pork and egg rolls. They by far the best summer rolls too. The waitress cracks me up because I have gone there for years and she is still always grumpy to me. She will refuse to let me order some things because "you not like this- you want ...." and proceeds to order for me. Of late, I've ended up at Miss Saigon instead, because even though the rolls aren't as good, the bun is and they take plastic. I just wish we could get at least one of the charlotte pike restaurants to open up in Franklin. After the Miss Saigon out here closed we have been Vietnamese free :(
