6/11 Mystic Area Great Food?

We'll be here wed through sat. morn. next week and would love suggestions for best 2 places for exc dinner food in the area. We always go to Somewhere in Time for bkfast. when we're in Mystic but we need great dinner restnts. We love The Suburban in No.Branford (we were big fans of his at Roomba, and here as well; I wrote up some CH reviews of it last June.) Love innovativeness and various ethnic. Have had mixed experiences at Cafe Routhier (bad in din. rm.; good in bar). And what about Providence spots(45 min away, yes?) Thanks much.

p.s. does anyone know if the new Mexican place has opened in No Branford- owned by the Suburban owner?

  1. Hey chef,
The Suburban is in downtown Branford and Arturo's Mexican place is expected to open in 2-3 weeks. Have you ever tried Kitchen Little for breakfast of lunch in Mystic? The foods really great.
Sorry I can't help with dinner recs. Have a nice time.

    1. My two favorite dinner spots when I'm in the area are the Captain Daniel Packer Inn, where I prefer the pub as the food's as good as upstairs in the restaurant at about half the price. And I really like Noah's in nearby ver quaint Stonington. Bothe will treat ypou very well so there's no need to trek up to Providence.

Do you like Water Street Cafe? We go there often and the food is great. We also love your favorites.

      2. OC,
I enjoy reading your posts on the Boston board. I agree with you on Somewhere In Time. I am there almost every Sunday. As for dinner, I recommend Noah's in Stonington Borough, Tony D's (Italian) in New London and Olio just off I-95 in Groton. Let us know where you end up and what you thought. I value your opinion.

mensch, will def report back. and thank you for making my day.Btw, have any of you tried that fancy farm to table small restnt in the NE corner of CT. cannot remember name right now. still river cafe maybe? i heard SUCH conflicting reports on their food. we had long great conversation w/ a neighboring couple at one of our beloved Suburban dinners- and they said "No Way/ bad. Cafe Routhier much better." So we cancelled still river? and did routhier and regretted it major. Routhier sent us coupon to apologize; we used it last mo. for take-out from Routhier bar to our Mystic hotel room- and it was v good- steak frites, rabbit fricasee... So, i digress... but i think i'm asking:

what you think of still river

          and

what you think of routhier(bar and din. rm.)

          thnx much again.

I have had excellent meals at Still River Cafe and highly recommend it. SRC is simply on a different (read:higher) level than Routier. We have had better luck at Routier than you but there have been front of the house issues there on a few occasions.

the noah's website hosting has expired; do they still exist? and mensch, we will have 3 or 4 bkfst in mystic-old lyme area . what do you think of kitchen little and other spots? thnx much.

              1. re: opinionatedchef

Not sure about why their website is down but they are still in business. I was there last Saturday night. The are also open for breakfast and lunch. I don't want to get raise your expectations too much. Noah's is not on a level with SRC, for example. It's a nice neighborhood place with fresh fish, etc prepared well. Boom in Old Lyme is another possibility for dinner as is La Belle Aurore inNiantic.

I have not been to KL but have heard good things about the food although because it so small, you're right on top of diners at the next table which I don't care for.

        2. If you like middle eastern cuisine, Pita Spot is outstanding, and inexpensive. They're open 3 meals a day, but breakfast is typical American.

Stumbled upon this place recently and it will remain one our destination stops on drives to and from NYC. Great staff, great food, great views.

I respectfully disagree re Dog Watch. While the view and the atomosphere are nice, I found the food very average and pedestrian. A caesar salad, for example, was bland and the dressing appeared to be from a jar. A burger ordered medium rare was a good size but came out dry and well done. Fun place for a drink and perhaps some apps but I would not recommend for dinner.

glad you chimed in. we had delicious oysters, clams casino, and a descent chowder, a good martinin and a lovely Mystic IPA so perhaps you are correct that it is best for a drink and app stop rather then dinner in and of itself.

I love the Dog Watch. Can't get enough of their tuna tartare, followed by the bouillabaisse. Nice wines by the glass at reasonable prices...I'm always too full for desserts so I can't comment on those!

                  1. re: sarment

My husband just mentioned tonight taking a drive tomorrow to try their tuna tartare. Although we are a bit of ahi tartare snobs as we have many wonderful versions. I'm excited to either be pleased or watch the dogs on the wharf. Perhaps I can convince him to try the boullibaisse, as he is also craving the clams casino with is basically a few shucked littlenecks topped with a head of garlic, some bacon and a full stick of butter. Hmmm? would the three be too much? Oh yeah, he also was thinking about the chowder. Too many chowders taste of flour and cream, we prefer those that taste of the sea.

              2. I also love Kitchen Little, if the weather is nice they will have picnic tables outside.

Cafe Routier is always better at the bar, no idea why.

Haven't tried it in Niantic yet, but the menu looks promising for La Belle Aurore.
