Suggestions for group of 8 this Monday affordable, high end-ish Lunch?

The lunch is partly a family celebration. I want it to be special but also affordable. I tried Del Posto for their lunch pre-fixe, but for whatever reason they said the maximum size was 6. We did SHO last time, and Jean George the time before.

Any other ideas? Ideally, I'd want less than $35 for the food (not including tax/tip/drinks). Thanks.

  1. Try Tocqueville.

For something more unusual and also high end, try Junoon.

    1. I think there's something special about Metrazur on the balcony in Grand Central. That space is just larger-than-life. It fits your price range: They have their Lunch 27 -- $27 for an appetizer and entree, or entree and dessert, or other variations.

We've never been to Metrazur, and I've never read any raves about the food though I do agree that the Grand Central Terminal setting is spectacular. Note that Metrazur will close permanently after dinner service on July 1st.

peter j's Tocqueville suggestion is the one I immediately thought of. The 3-course lunch prix-fixe for $29 is a steal for cuisine of such superb caliber. Service is pleasant and professional, and the elegant dining room is one of the most beautiful in the city.

Another excellent possibility is Cafe Boulud. They offer two prix-fixe lunch options: 2 courses for $32 or 3 for $38. Delicious food, polished service, and lovely ambiance.

          1. Thanks for some of the suggestions. I was thinking Tocqueville, with the main concern that the pre fixe menu seemed a little limited.

I'll check the Monday res situation. But please more recs, if any.

Just to report back, in the end, I trimmed the party to 6 and stuck with Del Posto. I loved the lunch there, but I'm easy to please. The rest of the party thought the food was a little uneven (quality and portion - some were amazing/ok, some were big/small), I found the service a little uneven (they didn't refill our champagne glasses), but I think overall they did there best. And for the price, it's good.

It would have been more special if it was 8, but since it was partly for my mom, she probably enjoyed (or found unique) the occasionally over the top presentation and ambiance more than the missing company.
