Good Food Shopping near 88th and York

Wondering if you can recommend some good grocery shopping near 88th and York. A friend of mine is there for the summer and would love some suggestions. Also, any other foodie type suggestions near there would be great!

As to wine prices, I now call K&D on Madison Avenue. If you order a single bottle, they will deliver it for free and we have found their prices to be lower than the local neighborhood stores.

otomanellis on 87 and york is a good butcher. i used to live on 88 between york and east end

Ottomanelli is at 82nd and York. For good... but expensive fish.... there is Dorian's on York between 83rd and 84th. The best prices for wine, etc. are Yorkshire Liquors at 1st and 85th. A good old fashioned bakery is Glaser's on First near 87th Street. The Gristedes at York and 86th is good for staples... but otherwise a pretty dreadful store.
When all else fails there's Fresh Direct!

Eli's Vinegar Factory on 91st btwn 1st and York if you're made of money. Agata & Valentina on 79th and 1st if you work for a living.

Fairway, hands down, on 86th btwn 2nd & 3rd when it opens later this summer.

There are two small farmers' markets in the area: 82nd between 1st and York on Saturdays, and 1st Ave between 92nd and 93rd on Sundays, though the latter doesn't get under way until mid-June. See http://www.grownyc.org/files/gmkt/map... .

Fairway on E. 86th Street is a long way from being completed this summer... walked by the other day and there was a crew there, but the insides are still pretty raw.

Other than D'Agostinos at 80th & York, the Gristedes at 86th & First, and the Food Emporium at 86th and Second, the UES is pretty sparse.

If your friend is a Costco member then there is the store at 116th and Pleasant Ave.

(Take the M15 bus up First Ave.)

Or do like most of us do...schlep from the westside...Trader Joe's at 72nd & Broadway.

(Take the M31 down York and then the crosstown M72 bus directly crosstown. I usually visit Trader Joe's, Fairway and the WestSide Market in 1 trip.)
