I have a reservation for lunch in the Jewish quarter for Nonna Betta. based on the posts here that appears to be an unpopular place. Piperno has also been ruled out and I've been there a few times. Any suggestions for Sunday lunch in the Jewish quarter. Love to have those delicious artichokes!

  1. It's not the time of year for artichokes, so they won't be local. I been been to Nonna Betta, so I can't say, but I certainly wouldn’t rule out Piperno, which I think is great. I was last there in early May.

in that case, Piperno would be the alternative since, based on discussions here, they have "perennial" artichokes! We are having dinner at Flavio al velavevodetto and we were looking for a fun place for lunch with some delicious fritti. I loved the artichokes at Piperno but the other items were just ok.

    2. Nonna Betta unpopular? They are great for fritti, and Piperno is great for them, too. But artichokes, they won't be local anywhere. Get the stuffed zucchini flowers instead.

I thought i read on some posts that there were some complaints with Nonna Betta . The original comments were great and since we have been to Piperno I thought this would be a good alternative. We'll give it a shot then. Thanks for the feedback! ( i love zucchini flowers as well). Another question. I've notice that you are quite wine expert. Do you have any wine bars you particularly like??

thank you bedrock, yes, I am a sommelière and a wine educator. I do like il goccetto, al vino al vino, tre scalini, barrique, cul de sac, cavour 313 whenever my emphasis is on wine and am not necessarily after good food (these all have some level of food offered, from basic salumi & cheese to a bit more, at varying quality degrees). Some better places, where you can drink great wines AND eat great food are Bacocco (simpler things, great fish crudi), Roscioli and Enoteca Parlamento.

where`s Bacocco, I don`t think I know it? Otherwise pretty much agree with your list, although in terms of quality of mescita I would have to prefer Goccetto then barrique and roscioli. Don`t really like tre scalini at all, unless I`m looking to have a spritz in a crowd...

I agree with minchilli about Gigetto, and have heard others speak bably about Nonna Betta. My roman friends really adore Paris in Trastevere, but they have been going there forever and I do always have a better meal when I go with them

      2. I've had two really bad meals at Nonna Betta. I know a lot of people like it, but I found the service rude, and the food truly bad.
I just had lunch at Gigetto today, and had a glorious lunch. We started with fried artichokes, which they get from France. No, they are not local, but then again, a lot of vegetables aren't at most restaurants. I saw the crates full of big, purple and green artichokes which they were cleaning one by one. And they were fried perfectly. We also had excellent fried zucchini blossoms.
Pasta was one of the best Caccio e Pepe I've had in a long time, plus a very good Amatriciana. Second course was grilled lamb chops, perfectly cooked.
The setting is the best in the ghetto, right next to Teatro Marcello and the Portico d'Ottavio. Ask for a table outside, in front.
I also like Piperno a lot, but its much more expensive than Gigetto and if you've been there already....
