Best Taco In LA

I'm visiting my cousin Westwood over the weekend, and coming from Canada, I don't get much good Mexican food. So I am searching for the absolute BEST taco in the area. Gluten free is a must because my cousin has an allergy, but I was thinking if it was a real taco, they would use corn tortillas instead of flour ones. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

  1. You'll need to be more specific - do you mean crispy fried tacos or soft tacos? Any particular meat preference?

What I was envisioning was a soft taco with a corn tortilla shell. The inside doesn't really matter, but my favorite is always some good pork carnitas. Does this clarify a bit?

    2. Mexicali Taco & Co.

Mexicali Taco & Co. has since relocated from First Street & Beaudry to a new location at 1820 Industrial Street in downtown Los Angeles.

Just be sure that they don't use their flour tortillas... Otherwise, excellent choice! :)

        2. dude listen to me i feel your pain, i have spent time in quebec and ontario and the mexican food situation is DIRE! Its just too far north for Mexicans to feel comfortable. When you come to LA, PLEASE check out these tacos....The Grand Central Market at 317 South Broadway in Downtown LA is one of the coolest food related places I've ever been to. Inside is Las Morelianas, where 2 brothers, Fernando and Abraham from the Mexican state of Michoacan prepare the best tacos I've ever had. You must try "mixto" and "trompa". If you follow my guidance you will be in for an enlightening experience.

          2. The best taco in LA is the Carne Asada Taco at El Parian:

            El Parian
            1528 Pico Blvd
            Los Angeles, CA 90015

Also check out the carne asada and carnitas tacos at Los Cinco Puntos in East LA. The thick corn tortillas are fresh and made on the premises. Remember to buy a couple packages of warm fresh corn tortillas to take home.

Okay, someone needs to explain to me why the carne asada tacos at El Parian are so raved about. I've been a half-dozen times now trying to "get it." More often than not the meat is dry, IMHO. The little bit of tomato topping on it is nothing to write home about. The table salsa is nice and fiery, but beyond that... why is it such a standout for so many people? What makes it better than two dozen other asada tacos in town? What am I missing?

I've been waiting for the same answer, except I think I asked the question in 2005. I much prefer the carne asada tacos at King Taco just a few blocks further down Pico at Alvarado.

And for a similar-type carne asada -- larger than the ones at most places and with bigger pieces of beef -- I prefer the flavor of the carne asada taco at The Talpa in West LA.

THANK you, Jwsel. Link to that thread? On my last visit to El Parian, I drove past that King Taco and slapped my forehead. "I coulda had King Taco?!"

Sadly Ricky's uses flour in his batter... so it's out for the gluten free friend...
