Fresh sardines

foreverhungry Jun 8, 2011 09:17 AM

A couple months ago, I saw packaged sardines for sale somewhere in the MSP area. It looked like they were about 1 pound packages. Whole fish, head to tail. Plastic packaging, with some blue on it. For the life of me, I can't remember where I saw them. Can anyone help?

Not sure where that was, but I know Coastal sells frozen whole sardines. I don't believe it is possible to get fresh sardines here in the midwest.

Yes, sorry, I misspoke. I meant frozen. Coastal. That must be it. Thank you!

        It is Coastal.

Be forewarned that they are not cleaned. However, it's a fairly easy process of slicing the underside of the fish and washing out the undesirables.

Excellent info! Thank you. I'm looking forward to grilling some sardines this weekend!

For what it is worth, I'd recommend stuffing them with some lemon, minced shallot, fresh herbs (thyme and oregano are my favorites), salt+pepper, and a little minced garlic. They seem to turn out pretty well that way.

Remember to thaw them out too. I forgot that part when I made them. Microwave thawed fish......not so good. The 2nd batch the next day were much better.
