I just found a hole in the wall place Aladdins coffee shop on Hope and 12. They have a buffet lunch but you can get tacos that are pretty good too,

I think El Pollo Loco has the best crispy tacos. No one believes me... sigh.
Ricky's is NEAR downtown (Silver Lake/Los Feliz). Great guy. Great fish tacos.

All Right! Went to Mexicali on Friday PM with the (no longer-Pup-sized) Chow Pup; after waiting (the "super smokey" applies to the customers after waiting, as well as the food) for a while for them to get rolling (we got there at 8 sharp) we powered through a couple of chicken tacos, a chicken vampiro, and a cachetada. Excellent, in both my and his (taco-centric) view.

It doesn't matter how good the tacos might be, because so far it's been vaporware. Two weekends in a row I ended up at Kike's because 1) Mexicali ran out of food 2) they completely shuttered prior to midnight, w/o tweeting an update.
If you're going to use "social media" to grow your biz, why not also use it for customer service?

La Torta Loca in the fashion district (Between 8th & 9th on Santee) ~ their crispy asada tacos are amazing (and of course their tortas hehe)
