Pomi Tomatoes Question

Over the past month I've used Pomi tomatoes on two different occasions and both times found them to differ vastly in color from the canned tomatoes I've used. They were quite a bit darker, and almost rusty in color. The first time, I used the tomatoes and they tasted fine but the second time I threw them out because I was cooking for other people. Has anyone had a similar experience? Is this typical? Or does anyone know what might cause this. Thanks!

Surprisingly, on America's Test Kitchen's canned diced tomato taste test yesterday, Pomi came in dead last. Everybody hated it. If memory serves, Kimball said it had no tomato flavor at all. Though testers mentioned tasting the metal in some of the canned ones, they still preferred them to Pomi.

They did mention that their tomato product tastings over the years have been inconsistent. Their prior favorite may get bad ratings the next time they try it. As they acknowledged, products like this are only as good as the growing season from which the contents come.

Tomatoes vary in quality by season, and even within season. You will get different coloration if the product is minimally processed, as POMI's is.

Agree...but op said they were almost rust colored. That would worry me some, and I probably wouldn't use them. Pomi's are usually bright red and very comparable to good canned tomatoes.

I've used them often for years, and they've always been pretty bright and fresh looking and tasting as compared to canned, IME. I wouldn't use them if they seemed off.

I just tried it for the first time to make some pizza sauce and thought it was pretty fabulous. I wouldn't have if I'd had your experience, though. I did get two boxes, and will check the second to see if it was any different from the first. My only beef with the paper box packaging is that it's easier to pinhole or wear off a corner than a can.

I recently used two containers of Pomi chopped tomatoes that were beyond expiration date because I buy them on the rare occasions when they're on sale, then save them for something special....for too long! They tasted fine. If I worked really hard I might be able to convince myself that they were slightly rustier in color than canned. I have dial-up so I can't navigate their heavily-videoed site, but in case there is further processing info, here is the link: WWW.POMIONLINE.IT

Very weird. Although I usually use canned San Marzano tomatoes, I have used Pomi tomatoes and have not noticed any difference in their color. I wonder if your packages came from the same lot which was either a normal variant, or spoiled. Did you buy them both at the same time? Did the second box taste ok?
