Crab Fest #7 at Hungry Cat

$75 for a 3-4 course menu, with blue crab as featured.

Has anybody been to Hungry Cat for Crab Fest? How is it? Are the crabs from Maryland or La?

  1. Went last year. It was a god time and I thought I got my $75 worth of crab. The crabs were from Maryland. It came out to 6 crabs a person. There was a crab soup, thai style, and a crab cake. There was also this AMAZING lemon dessert.

Go! Prepare to get messy - REALLY messy - got to like working for your food.

I went with 2 BIG guys and they were full at the end of the meal.

    Report back.

What may amount to 8 crabs for $75, doesn't seem like a good value. I think I'll just order crab and crab cakes, directly from Maryland and enjoy.

    2. I've gone in the past and always had a great time, but as they've gone from AYCE crabs to a limited amount, along with a price creep each year I think it may finally be time to sit this one out.

Along with your drinks etc, you are looking at a $100+ afternoon per person. It's fun, but bit on the pricey side.

a bushel in MD cost less than a hundo :)

        1. re: Sgee

Depending on the size, a bushel has between 5-8 dozen crabs. Easy to round up a few friends and order a bushel or half a bushel, crab cakes, etc and split the cost. You'll get more than 6 crabs person for less than $100.

All things considered, I would prefer David Lentz to do the cooking, a great bartender to mix the drinks and a good server nearby. The Crab fest sounds like great, sloppy fun.

so did this little Crab feast already occur and do they offer blue crabs and crab cakes on their regular menu?

                  Maudie, do you work there???

Also, do you happen to know if they have Crab Cakes on other days as well as blue crab other days or is it a one-shot deal.???

:) I most definitely do not work there. I have been to the Hungry Cat twice, both at the Santa Monica Canyon location. I just love the food and the ambiance. I grew up nearby. The first time I was there, a couple of weeks ago, I had the crab cakes and they were delicious. I don't recall if they were a special as we were very involved in oysters and peel and eat shrimp that night. A couple of nights ago we returned and I ordered the Soft shell Crab. It was the most brilliant presentation of this dish I have ever tasted or observed. This was definitely a special. My description of the dish would not do it justice. Suffice it to say, it was spectacular and original. I did not notice if crab cakes were on the menu as I was excited about my upcoming order of steamed mussels with pork belly. It was incredible.
One guest had a whole Orata with Morrocan spices and loved it. Another had the lobster roll and was extremely happy. They shared a seafood carpaccio of some kind as an app, but I didn't pay attention as I was so happy with my crab. This was the meatiest, fattest, least spidery soft shell crab I have ever tasted.
Dessert: 2 split warm, freshly-made blueberry beignets and I had the fresh farmers market cherry cobbler. Great meal. I have noticed that the patrons are drinking cocktails, not many bottles of wine on the table. Have a reservation for next week. I just looked at my recent post about the crabfest. I copied and pasted from their website

Unfortunately, this year at least, the crabfest will just be at the Holywood location, leaving those of us nearer to the Santa Monica branch with something else to be crabby about.

Oh, yeah, I forgot that they opened up a newer location in Santa Monica cheeck to jowel with Giorgio Baldi, if I am ever in the area, Baldi will always rule, have you been to Baldi before.

It's been a few years since I've been to the Holllywood location and I forgot that they also have a location in Santa Barbara that they opened up a few years back.

Have not been to Baldi, probably, because we are so comfortable at Toscana. Definitely time to try Baldi.
