Market Restaurant in Del Mar

Anyone been to the Market Restaurant in Del Mar? Is the cost worth it? Are there any restaurants in the San Diego area (including La Jolla and Del Mar) that can compete with Market?

  1. Not to sound too smarmy, but perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the Chowhound search utility (caveat: "Market" will match a lot of unrelated threads, for example farmers markets). Here are a few threads you might check out:

    1. There are a number of restaurants which can easily compete with Market especially looking at the rather high prices at Market: Blanca, Kitchen 1540, 9-10, Georges, 1500 Ocean, Tapenade. In addition there are a number of restaurants which might serve more bistro-style cuisine which is perhaps not as refined as Market but overall have the better value and creativity, e.g. Cafe Chloe, JSix

When the chef was at Arterra, I thought his food was excellent, generous, unpretentious, and well-priced for the quality. I've tried Market twice and been underwhelmed--expensive, really small portions (and I don't like to overeat), and the staff seems to have a "holier than though" attitude--kind of like "you should be more appreciative for the chance to sample our Chef's cuisine". All of this imvho--maybe I should give them another try, last was about 2 years ago.

        I'd give Blanca a shake.

I agree that the cooking from Chef Schroeder at Arterra was much better than at Market

      2. I would add A.R. Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines.

        1. Rancho Valencia Resort
Kitchen 1540 at L'Auberge Del Mar
A.R. Valentien at the Lodge at Torrey Pines
          Mille Fleurs

Rancho Valencia Resort just lost their Chef de Cuisine (and key driver behind the new, creative cuisine) to 1500 Ocean. Not sure in which direction Rancho Valencia Resort will go.

          2. Cavaillon has great $32 prix fixe menu M-Th.

Addison is great, especially for the 4 course $98 menu.

Cavaillon will change its chef/owner in 4 weeks so you have to be either quick or wait a few months until the new team settled in
