Disappointed w/ LAZY OX CANTEEN! Other suggestions in or around DOWNTOWN?

We wanted to like Lazy Ox Canteen... but found it really overpriced for the quality of food we got. (They completely overcooked the duck, for example.)

Are there other recommendations for downtown? A nice atmosphere (not TOO loud), but where the food stands out more?

I'm currently looking at: The Spice Table and R-23. (I'm guessing ROSA MEXICANO is not much liked on this board.)

We'll be a party of 3 (2 people from out of town). Thanks, Chowhounders!!

  1. Spice Table. I'm consistently disappointed with Lazy Ox an consistently satisfied with Spice Table.

See below extensive thread with impressive photos.

Thanks, Porthos! What is the atmosphere like @ "Spice Table"? Are the tables really close together?

Look through Perceptor's photos. He has pictures of the counter, the middle dining room and the back dining room. It's not as loud as Lazy Ox if that's what you're trying to figure out.

For a fool proof meal I'd recommend the sambal fried potatoes, fried cauliflower, lamb belly satay, pork satay, chile prawn satay, soft shell crab with salted duck egg sauce (get them now while it's in season), fried curried chicken wings, beef rendang, oxtail and shortrib stew, and the kon loh mee.

If you're into inventive cuisine and pop-up restaurants, one of the most talented chefs in town is doing a pop-up at Starry Kitchen. For now, available only June 6th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th.

That sounds amazing! I guess I'd better reserve early, huh?

    2. I had an underwhelming experience at Lazy Ox as well. I really don't understand the hype, nor am I willing to give it a second chance (it was that underwhelming!).

We had a very good experience at Wood Spoon, recently. The room is on the small side, decor is minimalist/simple, and acoustics are on the loud side (depending on who is dining), but not ridiculously so.

I have to say, when the owner of the Wood Spoon (Nathalia, I think her name is) is in the House, their food and service are top-notch.

Their pork burger with cabbage is one of my favorite burgers in all of LA... love their sangria and chicken pot pie also!
