Chocolate Burrs

RuralDeb Jun 5, 2011 05:43 AM

Does anyone have a recipe for these. My mother used to make them, they are cooked in a saucepan on top of the stove and then put on wax paper on the counter to dry and harden and they are delicious!

Thanks for the link, but that's not them. They were chocolate and coconut, no fruit and just let to dry and/or set. Good try though.

you sure they weren't just haystacks? coconut mixed with some sweetened condensed milk, baked then cooled and coated in melted chocolate?

Or just coconut stirred into melted chocolate (like TJ's pound-plus bars) then turned by spoonfuls onto waxed paper till firm. Mom used to do this with roasted nuts and also with cheerios. (Choc melted in a double boiler) Very simple and delicious.

Yes I'm sure they were a different animal although what you're describing sounds good.

If they were simply chocolate and coconut you simply need to melt some chocolate, blend it with flaked or shredded coconut and deposit spoon fulls onto a sheet of waxed paper to cool.

I've been thinking about these more. They had oatmeal, cocoa and coconut and fat & sugar, and milk I think. So they weren't a candy. Thanks for your help anyway.

Were they what I would call "No Bake Cookies"? http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/co...

Thanks everyone, that's the recipe! I guess my mother didn't put in nuts but everything else rings true. I really appreciate all the help.

Ok This is my Mom's recipe. I'm looking at the recipe card

            1.2 cup butter (melted)
            6 tbsp cocoa
            1/2 cup milk
            2 cups sugar
            1tsp vanilla

Bring to boil remove from heat
            Add 3 cups oatmeal
            1 cup coconut
Drop from tsp on waxed paper

Fast forward to my 2011 version
            3 cups chocolate chips melted
            Add 3 cups oatmeal
            1 cup coconut
Drop from tsp on waxed paper (if they last that long)
