Southern Spice closed and relocating ?
Called and got a ''no longer in service message", and found the web site announcement that they are relocating. The number listed just offers to take messages. Anybody know anything more? Hate do lose a nice little gem like that and hope the new place is just as good as the old one.

There's a new restaurant in the old space called Tandoori Hutt.

Hi mushimushi427,
I'm guessing that the Tandoori Hutt in the old Southern Spice space could be related to Tandoori Hutt in Richmond Hill (119-04 94th Ave., Richmond Hill, NY 11418).
I went to the Richmond Hill Tandoori Hutt about two months ago and liked it. They had a number of commonly seen Indian dishes (chicken korma, etc.) as well as chicken pakora (Indian chicken McNuggets—surpisingly tasty). Everything seemed a little on the expensive side given the portion sizes but I'd still go back.
Ciao,
Glendale is hungry...

Didn't that Tandoori Hut close for a long time? I went there many times and then remember it closing, I thought it was gone for good. It was a terrific place and a great stop to and from the airport. They even got an NYT review way back when.

I just received an email! The grand re-opening for Southern Spice is today, Sunday, October 16. I checked the website and noticed the menu has been revamped. More vegetarian dishes, additional soups and some old favorites. 1635 Hillside Avenue, New Hyde Park, NY. Website: http://www.southernspice.net

Wow, they have Goat Brain Masala on the dinner menu. Time to gross my friends out.
I've had brains before and it's definitely an acquired taste. My mother used to feed me fish saying it will help me swim, and brains saying it will make me smarter. I pointed out to her that, if the animal was smart, its brain wouldn't end up on the plate in front of me.
Anyway, I wonder how Goat Brain Masala is prepared. Have never seen it on a menu before.

The new Southern Spice--bigger, fancier, with tablecloths and linen napkins, and an expanded menu. In a section of New Hyde Park that's Little India--Bindies and Bangles across the street. All the old favs are on the menu plus great dosas plain and stuffed. Chicken 65, appropriately spiced vindaloo, samosa chaat, tamarind fish curry, breads--all up to snuff. We haven't tried the biryanis yet. Assume they will get a liquor license or at least beer and wine. Go try it.

I would agree with that view. Nothing awesome, some things like the chaat not very good. Usha and Mumbai X'press are better for vegetarian and Five Star for southern. Fiza is better for northern stuff. After a movie nearby I keep ending up there because they do most things competently, cover all the bases, and have a clean space with good service and reasonable prices. No very 'houndish,I know.

Chef Mani called to let us know they are planning to relocate to Long Island. Sadly, this was a local restaurant for me. I look forward to the re-opening.

re: el jefe
That would be an excellent addition to an area flush with options like Five Star, Mumbai Xpress, Usha and Fiza. I can't wait.
