Cuban Food? Can you get it anywhere in Houston?

I spent alot of time in Washington D.C. and in Miami... finding good Cuban food was relatively easy... D.C. not so much as Miami (obvi) but still alot of choices. Now that I am back in Houston... I am looking for options. El Meson in the Rice Village hardly qualifies as authentic Cuban... it tends to be more South American fusion... Cafe Piquet is adaquate but not much mroe than that... I was spoiled by La Carreta on Calle Ocho in Miami...where the menus and most of the staff don't speak English. Anyone have any ideas for Houston Cuban?

  1. A short while back, a friend told me about an organization located in Houston that helps Cuban immigrants get settled into our city.

I'd strongly suggest you contact them:

    1. See, select category Cuban, there are 16 restaurants listed, most of them I'm not familiar with. I have been to Latina Cafe quite a few years ago, pretty good ropa vieja, not sure how authentic it is.

      1. I've been to Latina, Piquet, El Rey, Congas and Cafe Cubano, plus a couple of others that are now closed.. Congas is also known as La Vina, I think (per the menu and receipts). Best food I've had was Congas/La Vina. There's a big report on 29-95 from a couple of years back and I did a report on my blog but the 29-95 report is better!

Cafe Cubano is just a hole-in-the-wall; both that and Congas/La Vina seem to be hangouts for ex-pats while Latina and Piquet seem to have more mainstream customers, for whatever that's worth.

El Rey is Tex-Cuban and very popular but I think overrated.
