Dear Chowhounders,

I will be in LA mid June and would need recommendations for a lunch (monday). Would like to try a place that epitomise LA. Budget is not an issue. Will be staying in Chateau Marmont: Ican use short cab ride but would not spent 30 minutes to reach my destination...

Thanks

Pizzaria Mozza or Mozza2Go, their takeout delivery side.

The Ivy comes to mind with the phrase "... that epitomise L.A..." is mentioned, but I don't want to torture the palates of our hapless visitors.

It's not that bad. Stick to basics, and salads are decent. It's a Monday lunch, not Saturday evening dinner. What are your suggestions, btw?

          Spago for high end.

CAA agents galore at lunchtime at Craft in Century City.

Kate Mantilini for mediocre food but LA scenery at Monday noontime.

The Ivy & Kate Mantilini cancel each other out.

Love Craft, but would not say the cuisine "epitomizes LA" of a chain that's in Vegas & NY. And getting there by cab in 30 minutes is wishful thinking.

Not talking about food at all... Simply "the scene" - Ivy & Kate Mantilini are very similar in that dept.

The CAA agent scene at Craft is what I was referring to. It might as well be a McDonald's next to the CAA building, but alas, it's Craft instead.

Spago where I would start with the hand made agnolotti with sweet peas and mascarpone and then have the house smoked salmon pizza and finally see what was on the dessert menu...

Thanks, tempting, any idea of the set lunch price?
BTW any idea for a nice spot (more on the trendy/hedgy side) for sunday diner?

Hedgy? I assume that means "edgy."
If so, here are the edgiest near your hotel food and scene-wise
          Playa
          Fig and Olive
Bazaar or Saam (both at SLS hotel)

I had lunch at Spago yesterday and it was amazing...and Wolfgang Puck was walking around greeting & chatting every table!

We shared the Agnolotti with Sweet Greens Peas and Crab Cake to start - the Agnolotti was probably my favorite part of the meal. I had the Halibut, DH had the Chicken Palliard. Both excellent. We had Strawberry & Apricot sorbet with fresh fruit for dessert (this wasn't on the menu - but I special requested it). DH had 2 glasses of wine, I had a lemonade (bc I'm pregnant). It was about $200 with tip.

Definitely request a table on the patio. It was a glorious afternoon!!

wow, this is probably EXACTLY what i would have suggested. hand-made agnolotti with whatever's in season (imho the best pasta dish in LA, btw), the california fusiony pizza, and mr. LA chef himself, wolfgang puck.

Oh, and for trendy/edgy, you should hit up Bazaar on Sunday. close to where you're staying. crowd is trendy, the food and drinks are edgy (and tasty).
