where can I find a great homemade veggie burger (non soy based)?

I am looking for a restaurant where I can find a great veggie burger. I prefer a non-soy based kinda grainy burger. Non eggy and not soy tasting. It can have soy I would just rather not be able to taste it. Doesn't matter if it is a casual or fancy place cause I will probably just get it to go. I live on the upper east and prefer to find a local place. I have had some good ones on the LES but am looking to find a place that I can frequent this summer, so the closer to home the better. Thanks for your help.

  1. The three veg "burgers" that I like the most are:

--shake shack's 'shroom burger: though it is far from a "healthy" item (mushroom stuffed with cheese and deep fried on their signature potato bun, extra pickles please)

--blue smoke's veg burger: a smokey quinoa-based burger

--five napkin burger's veg burger: it sounds the weirdest but is really really tasty (beets and mushrooms)

Sorry that most I've mentioned aren't on the UES.

I am gonna try the Blue Smoke veggie burger. I am not that into mushrooms, so I am not a fan of Shake Shack's veg option. The quinoa based burger sounds interesting. Thank you for responding. No one else seems to have any interest.

thanks for the link. It was a great article and gave me some good ideas of places to try. I will do that soon. Unfortunately none of the places were on the upper east side. Looking for a place where I can order delivery for tonight. I will definitely try Hillstone's burger soon. I liked their food last time I was there and am dying to try their veggie burger. It sounds so good.

the Houston's/Hillstone burger is my absolute favorite. i haven't had one in four years since i had to give up gluten completely and i STILL crave that darned veggie burger! request a side of barbecue sauce with it - the flavors work really well together.

    2. Cafe Blossom on west 82 has a pretty great lentil burger.

Thank you so much! This place looks fabulous. I lentil-quinoa burger sounds so good. I am definitel going there.

      2. I've really liked the edamame-quinoa burger at French Roast (85th & Broadway). I know it's soy-based but mentioned it in case you like edamame but not tempeh or seitan.

That sounds good. Yeah...I like edamame. I am not a fan of soy meats or tofu, tempeh or seitan. I used to go to the French Roast a lot when I was younger. I forgot all about it. I dont think they had the burger back when I went, but I will be sure to check it out.
          Thanks

        2. I also live on the upper east side, but I don't know of any good ones. If you find one, I'd love to know about it. Gobo has a veggie burger on the menu, but I've never had it, so can't comment. The new Mamagyro place has a veggie burger, but I was underwhelmed. To say the least.

I remember liking the veggie burger at Stand on 12th st. Their description says "Quinoa, mushroom, zucchini, parmesan, lettuce, tomato, onion marmalade, homemade ketchup," so probably not soy based. It was better than any of the meat burgers my friends ordered, IMHO.

I second the recommendation for the one at Five Napkin. Probably my favorite in the city.

I also liked Stand's veggie burger, and I'm a total carnivore!

          2. I also don't really like mushrooms.

Hillstone/Houstons is by far my favorite. They also let you substitute veggie sides for french fries all of which tend to be really good (though my fave is the red cabbage).

Blue Smoke is a good compromise restaurant, and while solid, the veggie burger isn't quite Hillstone's caliber.

On the cheap end, goodhealthburger has become my favorite place to order from when stuck as work late. I know you said no soy, but their tex-mex burger is excellent and doesn't remotely resemble the terrible veggie burgers you find in the freezer section.

            1. while soy, i always found the soy burger at dojo's to be my face veg burger in the city. i don;t think it tasted excessively soy-y, but then i wasnt looking out for that taste either

In the East Village, Black Market, next to Niagara at 7th and A gets high marks. Also, Kate's Joint at 4th and B.
