June 2011 Openings and Closings

Any upcoming openings this month? Any closings down the road that you've heard about? I know that an An Olive Garden whose design is based on Riserva di Fizzano in Tuscany opens next week in Danvers (and no, I'm not kidding), and the Red Lantern (Asian restaurant) should be opening in the Back Bay soon. And BerryLine just opened on Newbury Street, making this the 396th frozen yogurt place to open in that neighborhood in the past few weeks.

  1. Area IV expanding to dinner service.

Abigail's in that same neighborhood possibly opening.

El Centro adding lunch and brunch service.

Salty Pig (Coda folks in the old Firefly / Six Burner space).

Paul's in the North End (sandwiches in the former Going Bananas spot from the J. Pace crew).

Anemochory, Boston's least-underground underground dining club (they have more effective PR than many overground places).

      Sorry, that's Pauli's, not Paul's.

Do you know when Area iV is supposed to start dinner? I bike home right past it, and every night it's been closed. Would like to check it out, esp. since it's near my DC's work, but it's too far for lunch.

        1. re: cpingenot

I'll correct that by saying that they looked open on Friday the 17th when I rode by on my way home. (that's the first time I've seen them open for dinner)

        2. re: MC Slim JB

Incidentally, El Centro, which has lines out the door most nights for dinner, has not yet started its lunch service, thought it's threatening to do so soon. I don't imagine brunch will happen there until after lunch gets established.

still seeing studs and 2x4s when i walk past Abigails!

          2. Tootsie's Coffee Shop in the Greenwood area of Wakefield/Melrose (same shopping plaza as Porto Bello) looks close to opening.

There's a place going on on Rte 1 North, in Peabody, where the old diner was. Something like Red's Bistro. I have to go up thataways to the pool store, will confirm the name. It's a full new build.

Red's Bistro is by the people that own Red's in Salem.

              1. re: Fly

I think I have the name wrong, it's Red's Restaurant and Tavern. Still the same people?

                1. re: Chris VR

Unless something changed, while keeping the same name, yes.

Great, thanks! That's going to work out really well for me on my pretty regular lunchtime trips up in that direction.

              2. re: Chris VR

Tootsie's opened last Thursday, serving gelato, cupcakes and coffee drinks.

What, you don't like Italian farmhouses that serve exquisite versions of scrod parmigiana and toasted ravioli?

                  2. Recently spent some time with two guys that are opening an Italian restaurant in Waltham named "Charcoal Guido's". You can guess the rest. Should be opened by the end of Summer or sooner. Awaiting equipment from Italy. We'll see! Will update as I get more information.

Popped in here on Saturday - DW approved of their brewed coffee - I had a small torrone gelato - almondy nougat flavor with little bits of almond here and there - is gelato ever supposed to be anything other smooth? Anyway, it was almost too sweet, but not bad. Not house made - I think the guy said it was Kelly's? In any case, lots of flavors - 20 maybe - nice looking pastries in the case, not sure where they come from. The space is a little cramped, but you would think it would do tremendous business - nothing quite like it anywhere nearby, and it's more in tune with the ethnic flavor of the neighborhood, more than bubble tea anyway.

                        1. re: Bob Dobalina

Yes, there are sometimes little bits of things in gelato - for instance, straciatella is a traditional flavor which is basically a version of chocolate chip. And my very favorite gelato ever was the risi (rice) gelato I had at Vivoli in Florence, almost 35 years ago, which had grains of tender cooked rice in it.

                          1. re: Bob Dobalina

Thanks - that sounds encouraging. I'm hoping their panini will be decent as I work in the area and miss the Bobalicious banh mi from the early days when they were still good.

                        2. As gutterman reported last month 7 stars street food in rozzie was opening for dinner yesterday and according to their facebook page they actually did!! From their posts they are starting off with dinner and expanding to lunch as they get going.

                          so has anyone been??

                          1. Not this month--or anytime soon, for that matter--but I am happy to say that Wegmans Supermarket is planning to open a huge new store in Burlington, complete with a large food court.

The last Wegman's I was in (admittedly many years ago) didn't impress me as anything special. What's the reason for the excitement these days?

My family is originally from Rochester, and when I was young, we'd always go to the ones in the area (mainly Penfield). Back then, the setup of the store was unlike anyplace I had been to. It was like a really good mix of a modern-day Whole Foods and Roche Bros, and this was in the 1970s and 1980s. I haven't been to one in awhile, but still hear that it is considered to be one of the best markets in the country by many. Which one did you go to?

Folks, we're going to ask everyone to head to the Chains board for a discussion of the merits of Wegmans. While it's fine to discuss news about chains opening in this area here, please help us keep this discussion focused on the chow specific to this area. Thanks.

                              2. I think that I mentioned that Capital Brasil opened on Broadway in Somerville in a past thread (serving lanches or Brazilian sandwiches/snacks), but noticed last week that "Olá Gifts Café" is coming soon and is also Brazilian owned -- coffee, pastries, gifts. There was something that indicated they planned to participate in Sunday's Broadway Somerstreets but I didn't get a chance to check it out.

                                1. Pho Le opened last week across Pho Hoa in Dorchester. They're taking half the customers of Pho Hoa and ALL of what's left of customers from Pho So 1. Good food. Service is juvenile and sporadic but such is the case with all VNmese restaurant.

is it that good? or is that because it's new? I thought the Pho Hoa in DOT was competent (i.e. not life changing, but decent and better than the one in Chinatown).

                                    1. re: skc

It's new and quite good, but not extraordinary. Their service is a mess...saw some people got angry and walked out. One unique dish worth trying is the crispy baked whole catfish, an exact copy of the infamous dish at Favori Restaurant in Santa Ana.

                                  2. Wickedlocal is reporting that Big Papi's in Framingham will close at the end of July when the lease runs out and will look for a site closer to Fenway.

                                    1. I just sat down to a nice FIOS wi-fi connection and and ordered SHAKSUKA at the new Inna's Kitchen, very excited! Real Jewish Food, nice little cozy deli on Pelham St , right off Centre St in Newton Centre. I think it's directly behind Alan Bilzerian. There is nothing to eat in Newton Centre, so this is great news. The owners are a friendly young-looking mom (I assume Inna.) and her smart (ex-MIT Media Lab guy who commented on my BarCamp T-shirt) son who gave me the wi-fi password.

Shaksuka is a wonderful Middle-Eastern egg dish. It's a sauteed tomato dish, with onions, sometimes peppers, and then an egg is dropped in to cook over easy. It's pretty hard to find around here. Lots of things to try, they are vetting out Sharwama, they have Falafel, and lots of items in the deli. I might just work here and eat lunch too.

i feel really bad when an older food business owner(or anyone, really) gest to a point, after slaving away for years, when they just burn out/ can't do it anymore/ aren't making ends meet. Especially when this happens in an economic downturn and they can't sell the business for peanuts. i've never been to this place, but if the situation bears any resemblance to the above, i hope they finally get some rest.

                                              1. re: opinionatedchef

I went a couple of times and liked it, but thought that there were better places around. It seems like every other time I drove by it over the past several years, it was dark/closed/empty, but then I would inevitably see people dining there. Strange...

                                          2. I drove past the two empty buildings near the hole in the ground/Harvard science complex on Western Ave near N Harvard St today and saw a sign for Swiss Bakers in one of them. A little googling turned up a Crimson article that the Swiss Bakers (originally in Reading) will be opening soon, as will a Stone Hearth Pizza (of Belmont) in the former Citgo station next door. Neither look like openings are imminent but they will certainly breathe a little life into a desolate area of Allston for those looking beyond the Bus Stop Pub.

Good to see the space being used, but I would love to see something in that area other than large Chinese restaurants. Tsang's (delicious) is almost directly across the street and Imperial Garden (hilarious) is almost directly next door.

                                                        2. From the looks of things, Jason Santos new place Blue is pretty close to opening in the old Lobby space. Personally, I'm very excited for this because I live across the street and that area of the city is a dining wasteland (when I don't feel like walking to Chinatown/N End).

Not an opening or closing, per se, but anyone have news of who's taking over the kitchen at Gargoyles? What's on the menu these days? I usually check for menu updates when I walk by during the day, but they've had no menus posted in the windows for months now.

                                                                  2. re: trufflehound

Framingham is up for sale, although I wouldn't bet on a Brazilian restaurant going in there very quickly (and its been hard to attract non-Brazilian investment to downtown). Surprised there hasn't been an auction of equipment that I know of for any of the locations. Although the trend recently has been Brazilian restaurants closing down there have been a few openings around, Tropical Cafe in the Brazzille space on Hollis and I know of one supposedly higher-end restaurant which has been in the works for a couple of years, but has been slow to open and may be having money issues. Trend is to smaller and more specialized restaurants (particularly those in the race to the bottom for inexpensive churrasco have gotten hit by 30% increase in meat prices and less demand from Brazilian consumers). There are a few smaller places I want to check out, but in Framingham right now I would tend to go to Terra Brasilis or Tropical Cafe (I like that they do a lot of soups, a la carte, etc).

BTW prior to closing the Somerville Belo had reopened as Zona Sul Churrascaria, but I never saw any paperwork out there on a transfer of the liquor license. And that was forced to close in the same action. I would guess that there are probably encumberences on the various liquor licenses -- whether they be from suppliers or from the government, so that part may require a pretty large investment and outside of Allston most of their locations are setup in a manner which requries full bar sales so even in somewhere like Everett where there is probably plenty of interest the financials might tip it towards reopening as something else.

The signage never changed and the bar appears to still be opening normally, advertising karaoke and other stuff. I haven't stopped in to see what is happening with food or if the long time waiter is still there.

Brazilian reverse migration is slowing and I think that could lead to an uptick in restaurant openings, but consolidation will probably continue first and I wouldn't expect larger spaces like some of the Belos to open as $9.99 all you can eat rodizios.

                                                                        1. re: bear

I drove by the Sunset Cafe 2 days ago and there is now a banner "Coming Soon Sunset Brazilian BBQ and Buffet." So sounds like Oliveira's did fall through and maybe the Castanheira family is going to give that theme a shot themselves. There was a bit more info on the sign but its a touch hazy (I think about entertainment and such). They did try both Brazilian and Portuguese buffets a try in the past both which were fairly half-hearted attempts. They only seemed to have success with a pagode afternoon, but from what I understand the management themselves nixed it.

I just saw a copy of today's Brazilian paper and sure enough the Everett Belo which I mentioned would be desireable, will reopen sometime in the future as "Braza Bar and Grill." And it will offer a rodizio, per-lb option, and full buffet. So reopening a lot quicker than I expected. Apparently you can find them on facebook but I haven't, there are some promo videos on youtube (in Portuguese).

Perhaps this is old news but during my walk through depressing downtown crossing, I noticed that the prominent Finagle a Bagel on the corner of Tremont and Winter streets across from the Park Street station has closed and is papered over. Hopefully something decent will come to this highly visible spot. Are there any Finagles left downtown? Center Plaza?

Forgive me if this should be on the SE New England board, but apparently Martha's Stone Soup in Plymouth closed. On her website, Martha simply says the restaurant has closed and that she's looking for employment in the food service industry working with local and organic ingredients. A shame, as I never made it down to Stone Soup but loved Martha's Galley.

It got bought some years ago by a Turkish gentleman, who in addition to upgrading the Mexican/Salvadorean fare added some Ottoman flavors to the menu: hummus, kofta, mucver, Sultan's delight. There's some crossover, too: you can get a zucchini-fritter quesadilla and a kofta taco, for instance.

Despite being a neighbor, I don't frequent it much (I mostly save my Mex/Salv/Guat/Turkish meals for professional eating), but it's the only place to get a decent cheap taco in the South End. I'm guessing the North End outlet will be very similar.

My guess is that their webdesigner needed a photo for the restaurant, googled "clam box", and grabbed a photo of the Ipswich restaurant.

I think at this point its Oliveira's in Everett, Brasil on Ferry is still going strong (mostly delivery), Broadway Cafe and Cake & Cia are Everett bakeries which were having a good 'prato feito" a while back. One thing I am not certain is what happened to Brazilian Country (Sal e Brasa), that was still going last year but haven't heard much about it in a while. Picanha's might still be going but was the least consistent of the three in the square for food so hasn't been on my list.

Puccio's on Middlesex Ave in Medford is now Agiana's Italian Kitchen "A taste of the North End." I am assuming an ownership change, although still doing pizza, subs, and pasta but perhaps more of an emphasis on pasta/dining.

Anybody know anything about that?

Vicky put her Lebanese stuff on the menu, though when I asked a few weeks ago she told me it's "usually" available. Have not actually got there to try it but have heard good things, I think it was available on catering menus previously. A friend was raving about hummus she got at last year's farmers market that came from a place "on Riverside"--probably the same.

Anyone know what's slated to go in to the cursed spot in Davis at 401 Highland, formerly an eponymous restaurant, formerly Sauce, etc? There's definite construction lately, although it was already a nicely redone space and hardly would seem to need a lot of work. (Just a working business model, apparently.) Apologies if it's already been posted- having trouble keeping up lately!

Before that, it was Yee Village for probably the better part of the 20th century. The 410 Highland folks sure spent a heck of a lot of money redoing the interior over the course of a year.

I thought it was 401, but a quick google search reveals that it was actually called "400 Highland." It's not 410-- that's apparently a hair salon. So, yes, a 5 Horses Tavern, huh? Thanks for the info...
