Cafe Sevilla to debut new $2.7 million Gaslamp location

Hopefully their food will be good.

  1. I'm pretty impressed they were grossing 5 million a year at the old location, apparently.

    1. I'll second that comment about the food. The absence of real Spanish cuisine in San Diego drives me crazy. Seems like everytime I travel to other cities, I seek out Spanish restaurants because the very small handful we have here just aren't cutting it.

        Good point.

It seems like so many cities have phenomenal Spanish restaurants.

I just went to Mercat in Chicago and there is nothing in San Diego that occupies the same universe.

I wonder why we anything somewhat comparable.

How does Mercat compare to Jaleo? Went there a few months ago and was completely blown away!

I've been to both places (albeit the DC Jaleo, not the Vegas location) and there are many similarities, notwithstanding the obvious differences of the planxa and paella options. I just feel like the food at Mercat is much tighter, more focused. Service at both places is excellent. Price-wise, very comparable. I'd give the edge to Mercat based on flavour and execution (I always get the feeling that Andres' establishments have small lapses in dish preparation).

Shouzen wrote down my thoughts exactly.

I was also impressed by the prices of Mercat.

I felt like the meal and drinks I had there would have cost me $200 in San Diego (if we even had a place like that), but ended up being $150. For two people.
