OLD MEXICO on MONTAGUE STREET - STILL OPEN?

  • 7

Is this restaurant still open, and if it is, has anyone dined there recently? Any good?

  1. It has been gone for many years now.

    1. Gone for I think at least 10 years. Space is now a Subway. Food at Old Mexico was mediocre at best. Mezcal's was a bit better but they're gone too. If you want Mexican in the area go to Alma or Calexico.

You people are showing your age. It's been more than 15 years since its been closed and probably close to 25 when there was more than two tables occupied at prime time. The food was not mediocre, it was quite bad. Sort of a Mexican equivilant of a 50s Chop Suey restaurant. An historical artifact that finally bit the dust.

I dunno about quite bad. The paella was the best you could get in Brooklyn Heights.

I am, 75. Old Mexico was the first Mexican Restaurant I ate at in the early 60s. Being a neophyte, I thought it was good. I thought I'd go back there for sentimental sake. Sigh, I guess not.

While I agree that it may be 25 years since more than 2 tables were occupied, it hasn't been 15 years since it closed. It was still open when I moved to the neighborhood 11.5 years ago and was still open when I moved back to the neighborhood 8 years ago. I think it closed around 6 years ago.

My grandfather was Mexican, God rest his soul. He knew the original owners of Old Mexico and as a child we spent many of my grandparents anniversaries there for dinner. Grandpa would always order tamales from them for the holidays. Three years ago my daugher bough a condo in Brooklyn Heights and I was very dissapointed to see that they were gone. Perhaps the quality diminished at some point but for my Grandfather this was the place to go in the 60's for authentic Mexican food!
