Authentic Malaysian Sambal Belacan!!!!!!!!

  • 9

Hi,

I am trying to find an asian shop or supermarket which sells authentic malaysian sambal belacan, fresh pandan leaves and ikan bilis. I have checked out so many places - First Choice Supermarket, T & T, Bayview asian supermarket but have not been able to find it. Moreover when I asked the sales guy, he did not even know what I was talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Could someone please help me??????

Cheers!

  1. I've never seen fresh pandan leaves, only frozen ones. I make my own sambal belacan so I can't help you there. You can substitute the Japanese / Korean ikan bilis (just remove head, internals, and dry / crisp).

All 3 are ingredients used by Gourmet Garden so you might be able to convince them to sell you some?

My mother gets fresh pandan from the... Thai or Vietnamese grocery stores, I think. I keep forgetting where, though they are available!

If you remember, please post your source :)

    2. Quite obviously you are not east of the city, but in Pickering on Kingston Rd. near Brock there is a grocery store T Phat that sells fresh pandan leaves. they also carry other items from south east asia (i.e kecap manis, all kinds of Maggi stuff, shrimp chips, fresh galangal) . If you ever have to venture out east you may want to check it out. Not worth the drive just for one item though.
You will have to look for stuff, the staff are not always helpful (language barrier I think). Maybe bring pictures?

Nice! Might be worth the trip just to see what other stuff they have.

      2. Try Oriental Supermarket @ Kennedy and Denison. Last time I checked, they have everything on your list. Sambal belacan is in the international food aisle, fresh pandan leaves in produce section by thai basil and ikan bilis in the refrigerated section by other dried fish.

I went there and got belacan in block form. Thanks for the info. Googlers: balacan, balachong.

          2. Yesterday, I saw fresh pandan leaves, thai egglant, and other asian herbs in BT supermarket on Wilson/Keele southwest corner next to Rexall.
