Some recommendations for food around Hayward, Wisconsin (Sawyer Co., NW Wi)
I just returned from Hayward (my brother lives there) and thought I would post the places that we found this trip. Some I have been to before, but some were new.
Friday night Fish Frys can be found at almost every restaurant in Hayward My two favorites are Lost Land Lake Lodge and Pine Ridge. Lost Land just really, really good. I love their fish and coleslaw. But my absolute favorite is Pine Ridge. They serve broiled Walleye with their fish fry that is phenomenal. When we went, I only had a small bite of their breaded fish and chicken (and that was because my brother tore off a little piece of his and made me eat it) and had three big pieces of the broiled one. I am still thinking about it 2 weeks later! They also serve fry bread and fried chicken with their fish fry. It is truly amazing stuff. Amazing!
We also found a fabulous pizza place on K and KK. Angler's Haven on Lac Courte Oreilles. Delicious pizza! Many unique combinations. They have thin and thick (their thick is thinner than what other pizza places call their thin). I love spicy and ordered the Firehouse pizza on thin crust, well done - twice. They are not joking! There were about 6 jalapenos on each slice and man were they spicy! I was in heaven. Bro tried the BBQ Chicken the first time (thick) and the Jerk the second, he preferred the Jerk but liked them both. I got the Firehouse both times. The only thing I got different the second time was extra sauce and it was delicious! They serve fresh popped popcorn when you sit down. The owners are two brothers who really care about their guests. They walk around and talk to everyone. You feel like you are coming home when you go there (I guess you can be home since they also have 8 cabins that they rent out). If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend trying it - you will not be disappointed!!
If you are looking for a great bar with very friendly people and good pre-made pizzas (if they have Ken's homemade salsa, be sure to get some with chips) head on out to Dow's Corner Bar on 77 and A. You will feel right at home with Barb and Bob, Ken and Pam. A friendlier bar will be hard to find.
Great breakfasts can be had at both Coop's in town (get their homemade donuts and slather them with their homemade jams!) and at Spider Lake Cafe (it is for sale currently, so get there soon). Be sure to try their Salsa Macha (you have to know to ask for it). I usually get something that is slathered in gravy. Spider Lake Cafe is right across the street from Dow's.
Lynn's Custom Meats & Catering in town is also great. They have fantastic cheeses and meats. We got their salmon spread and their crab spread and a smoked cheddar (I think). They have wonderful bacon, sausages (lots of varieties) and meats. You can get casings there and mixes if you want to make your own sausage. I also saw that they had Norwegian salmon. They sell sandwiches and a friend of my brothers said that one day a week they have a family meal special (ribs, I think) that is very inexpensive for what you get. I have not tried it. They also sell baked good from a company that makes the absolute best pecan caramel rolls and breads. I took a bread making class with them last year at the Mercantile in town. You can place an order two times a week and it will be delivered to Lynn's. They also have online ordering so you can have their items shipped to you.
For spices and health food items (including vitamins) head to my favorite shop in town, Abundant Life on Main. Andy has a great selection of lotions, vitamins, canned goods, soup mixes, ethnic food items. My favorite part is her herbs and spices. She has stuff that is pretty hard to find and very reasonable prices. Every time I walk into the store I feel like a giddy child in a candy store! If something ails you, talk to Andy, she will be able to help!
The Hayward Bakery and Cheese Shop on Main has delicious breads (where else can you get a fresh-baked loaf of white bread for 50 cents??!! My most favorite things are their salty hard breadsticks and the cinnamon crisp. Yum YUMMMM!!!!
