Chowdown Cocktail Hour tonight (5/31) at Farallon

For the next in our series of events to find the best happy hours in San Francisco, hounds are gathering tonight at Farallon for "6 until 7." The menu includes six drinks and six snacks for $6 each; the online sample menu features Drakes Bay oysters, sliders and a confit of duck gizzards paired with a rye manhattan, Hemingway daiquiri and classic margarita.

The address is 450 Post Street, cross is Powell, near Union Square. We plan to arrive around 5 p.m. and will hang out until about 7; drop in (and out) as it suits your schedule. Please bring cash to avoid hassles with the bill.

Details on 6 until 7:

Just a note: this is a gentle reminder to those who RSVP'd via the SF Bay Area Chowdown list, and a last-minute invite to those who are not on the list. If you want to get advanced notice to attend (or organize!) a chowdown meetup, please review Ruth Lafler's excellent directions on how to sign up for one of the Bay Area lists:

If you attend the event, please respond with your commentary in this thread.

  1. Sadly, I am out of town and will not be able to join you tonight. But as luck would have it, the birthday party I attended on Friday started here with cocktails, so I got a nice taste of the Farallon happy hour. We had four seats at the bar and the latecomers stood behind us. There are also some small tables. My place was set with a black fabric mat, a black cloth napkin, heavy flatware, a selection of breads, and a hunk of sweet butter sprinkled with red salt.

I had the Hemingway daiquiri. Not as sweet as you'd think something this pink would be. Made with rum, fresh lime juice, fresh pink grapefruit juice, maraschino cherry juice, and some simple syrup. Nicely balanced, refreshing and fruity but not excessively sweet.

The Little Gem lettuce salad with green goddess dressing, citrus, and shredded hearts of palms was nice. The dressing is a bit heavy for such delicate greens, but it's painted on the bottom of the plate, so you can incorporate as little or as much as you like.

In the awesome-we-want-more-orders category, the steamed clams with chorizo were huge, plump and sweet. The bartender happily refilled our bread plates after we'd used up the toasted levain to catch every single drop of the delectable juices.

Didn't try them, but heard the fries and the croquettes were good. I don't recall seeing duck gizzards on friday's menu.
