Laguna Beach sushi?
we have had a summer vacation in LA (Rancho Palos Verdes) for 10 years. Each year we look forward to an evening at Sushi Zo. (well worth the drive.) This year we find ourselves in Laguna, without the babysitter. so are there any good local sushi places? (are there any a little farther, worth ditching the kids for?)

My top 3 in OC are Blue Fin, San Shi Go on Balboa Peninsula, and Maki Zushi. Blue Fin has great rolls, high quality fish and a full bar, Maki Zushi has the best variety of fish (several types of snapper or toro on any given night), and San Shi Go (there is also one in Laguna, but the guys in Newport did not recommend it) just has great all the way around, and is my favorite. I lay out my particulars (no shell fish) and let the chef pick what is good.
Others that get good reviews are Wasabi and Shibucho, but they are further out.
My wife has been recommended to and really liked 242 Fusion, which is the closest higher end place - right across from the main beach, but I have not been.
Other options I have tried in Laguna are Sushi Laguna (OK) and Mosun (I like the rolls there, but again it is not special).

OCshooter,
Funny, we don't do shellfish either. (or a lot of rolls)

If you want fish only and not all that interested in the rolls, my picks are:
#1 - San Shi Go on Balboa (I have not been to the one in Laguna, but the sushi chef in Balboa did not recommend it based on what I like)
#2 - Maki Zushi
#3 - Bluefin
Keep in mind, I easily spend $100 per person with some sake at each place. But then, I am not at all careful with what I order, so you can be more economical, I just want what is best at that moment or new to me.

There are a lot of places to save money, but good food is not one of them ;)

We're local and San Shi Go is our go-to for consistent, high quality, and authentic sushi. 242 Cafe is small, quaint, and delectable. Try the purple ginger sashimi.

I'd support Bluefin as well, but I'm not sure you're going to find anything quite like Sushi Zo in that area.

San Shi Go in Laguna is good. We have been regulars there for years. It isn't the best sushi in OC, but it is certainly more than acceptable, and the place is definitely family friendly.

By family friendly, do you mean they have food the kids would eat? or only they wouldn't get the evil eye?
