Great Brunch at 3 Speed
We woke up a little later than usual today, so going to the Bloordale Pantry, our usual brunch place, was out of the question - way too mobbed by 11 a.m. We decided to try 3 Speed, a small bar in the neighborhood that recently started to serve brunch.
The bar was pretty dark and empty when we walked in, so we got a table on their covered patio out back. They recently added a wood burning oven out there, so the whole patio smelled like delicious burning wood, even though it wasn't lit at the moment.
Three Speed has a short menu with the kinds of brunch items you'd expect: two eggs with bacon/sausage (or, refreshingly, smoked trout), eggs benny, huevos, french toast. Three Speed also offers quite a few specials and baked goods. That day, a bacon and cornmeal muffin plus an apricot scone was available. The specials included: a benny on crabcakes, a mushroom omelette, baked eggs in tomato sauce, and a couple of other things.
We ordered a full bodum of coffee ($7) and a freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. I got the baked eggs with asparagus and goat cheese, plus an olive flatbread ($10). It came with salad and homefries. The eggs were perfectly cooked, with the yolks still runny. The flatbread was freshly baked pizza dough with black olives - very tasty. My partner got the the huevos - two over easy eggs topped with pico de gallo, served on a cheese quesedilla covered in black beans. The huevos came with salad and homefries. The whole thing was really delicious, although it could have used a little salsa. I didn't try the bacon muffin, but my partner said it was delicious.
I think I'll definitely head back to 3 Speed for brunch. I'm curious about the wood burning oven, so might head over there for dinner sometime soon.
