Looking for a Chinese restaurant with really great authentic Chinese food AND really great Americanized Chinese food.

Need to please a lot of different palates....

I think R&G Lounge would also fit the bill. I've been there many times for lunch ordering from the Americanized lunch specials as well as for Cantonese seafood dinners and I've found it all to be very good.

sounds like there's a consensus. but can you order the cantonese items a la carte or does it have to be part of a set dinner?

r & g lounge had an hour wait tonight, so we went to great eastern and everyone was happy. was pleasantly surprised to find a hint of curry in their egg rolls.

Too bad China Village isn't in range. They do an excellent lemon chicken, I kid you not.

I'd bet on Great Eastern. I've seen tourists walk in in off the street and order the guilao-friendly Family Style" Dinner A and it looked good to me.

        Egg Roll
        Barbecued Spareribs
        Won Ton Soup
        Cashew Nuts Chicken
        Sweet & Sour Pork
        Great Eastern Fried Rice
Beef With Oyster Sauce 3 to 4 per son add.
Kung Bow Prawns* 5 to 7 persons add.
Peking Duck 8 to 10 persons add
Tea & Fortune Cookies 8 to 10 persons add

oops, sorry; haha. ideally chinatown, but definitely SF.

and i know chinatown doesn't have a ton of authentic places to begin with, so i guess my real question is if anyone's tried the americanized offerings at places like bund shanghai, z&y, pot sticker (recent incarnation), etc. i've had the americanized offerings at r&g and they were good, but not anythign too special.

My standard for very good Chinese food in the Chinatown area is usually R&G, and they certainly do Americanized Chinese food with all the tourist trade. How do you tell if Americanized Chinese food is "anything special"?
