Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx

70th birthday to celebrate in Brooklyn--any suggestions?

My father turns 70 on June 12th and we find ourselves still dithering about plans. I suggested some sort of bacchanalia and my mother replied "that's not really our demographic" (meaning many of their friends don't really drink). So we're at square one.

My dad loves beer, and food (fairly adventurous) and hates noise and waiting. They live in Manhattan but are former Brooklynites with more friends here than there. I'm thinking a group--maybe 10 of us--have an early dinner somewhere with a garden maybe. Or open to any and all other ideas. Anything come to mind?

  1. I've seen parties of 10 at The Grocery. Great food, but I don't think they have beer (or any of quality), just wine. Recently we ate for the first time in Purple Yam in Midwood. Sort of upscale Filipino food, really very goo. Nice garden. Quite a good (bottled) bee selection. Also Applewood, Convivium Osteria ( weak on beer, fine for wine), Good Fork (Red Hook), iCi, and a favorite place for us to take Manhattanites, Locanda Vini E Olii (also wine, not beer). All of these places are not very loud; most don't have a full bar, just beer and wine.

Great suggestions (many of these are faves of my Dad so you're really on target here!). I hadn't thought of The Grocery, will see if they have a table. Thanks!
