  1. Actually, when in season, Marie Calendars does a good strawberry pie. Good peach too.

I like their fresh strawberry pie too. All the strawberries are always perfectly huge and just ripe enough.. Not under ripe and not overripe!

    2. You could give House of Pie's a test drive and see what you think. Also, Jongewaard's Bake n Broil in Long Beach is pretty famous for their pies. I would imagine that Susina would be a bakery that could do an excellent one since their other baked goods are so tasty.

It's been much too long since my last visit to Susina and I've never had their pies, but I've always heard they do great pies. Considering they do one of the best cakes that include berries (fresh in this case - the Berry Blossom cake), I think they'd be worth pursuing.

      2. Never been to Heidi's, but how about just getting like half-dozen strawberry donuts from Donut Man in Glendora, and arrange them in a circle and call it a day?

that's exactly what I thought too!

        2. Pie 'n' Burger, in Pasadena, does a nice, basic strawberry pie: just a big ol' pile of glazed strawberries in a pie crust. I like it with their excellent whipped cream, but not necessary.

It's been a while, but IIRC, Apple Pan (West L.A.) also does a similar strawberry pie.

Forgot to mention that I picked up a strawberry pie from Apple Pan - along with the banana cream pie of course - and it was very good. My only complaint was that some of the strawbs were shy of ripe, but other than that, it was a classic strawberry pie loaded with berries and topped with the signature whipped cream.

We served the strawberry pie and banana cream pie side-by-side - nice combination. I think we may need to try serving the apple pie (with the caramel topping) in the same way with either of the first two.

My one reservation about Apple Pan's pies are that they have a very low filling-to-crust ratio. If you love crust like I do, you may be disappointed. My wife loves the Apple Pan style, though. I prefer P 'n B's strawberry pie even though theirs is on the pectin-y side.

Pie 'N' Burger has a good strawberry pie. I remember buying a slice a couple of times. The glaze is a bit too gelatenous for me. I would rec one of the chains, Marie Callender's or similar spot. Their fresh strawberry pies are usually good.

on't know if Jongewaard's Bake N Broil in Long Beach has fresh strawberry, but their lunch special with a burger, drink and slice of pie is really good. Some folks on this board rec'd it to me years ago, and I love it. I don't make it out there often, but it is yummy. Their pies and pastries seem to be made fresh, in house, and are delicious, especially the crust.

            3. All this talk of strawberries, so I've decided to pick a strawberry donut and chocolate covered strawberries from Donut Manstrawberry pie from Pie & Burger and some Fosselman's ice cream and go on a sugar rush tomorrow!!

Great choices! I like all three places!

You could also hit up Carmela on E Washington in Pasadena for either their strawberry buttermilk or their strawberry sorbet with black pepper. If you like Scoops and Bulgarini you'll probably like Carmela. OTOH some die-hard Fosselman's devotees aren't fans of that style.
