Help! Need to find best South Bay sushi restaurant!

For high school graduation dinner, my son wants to go to a sushi restaurant. This will be on a Saturday evening after 6:30PM and we'll be driving from Menlo Park. The four of us (2 adults, 2 teens) hope to go to (reserve a spot?) a great restaurant within a 1/2 hour drive. Though everyone in our family likes sushi, we don't normally visit sushi restaurants. All suggestions, tips are welcome!

So are you looking for sushi restaurants in the South Bay or the Peninsula? I am confused...
Also, does your family prefer sashmi/nigiri or rolls (because some places are good at one but not the other and vs. versa)?
If San Mateo is not too far, I think Sushi Sam's may be a good choice for most everything, but if you can specify the kind of sushi you are looking for it will be easier to suggest places.

Everyone likes nigiri sushi and maki sushi. Not much for sashimi (which is not sushi, btw). Also, from Willow in Menlo Park, Milpitas and Fremont are in range, so are Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Redwood City (and, obviously, Menlo Park). San Mateo is a bit too far north.

Most people in this country say they are looking for a "good sushi restaurant" when they want good sashimi.... I would never assume a poster wouldn't want sashimi based on this phrasing. I was mainly wondering if you are looking for traditional sushi or the fancy rolls with a million thing that are so popular these days.
Also, San Mateo is closer to Willow Rd. Menlo Park than Milpitas or Fremont.. I know this from experience and also Google maps agrees.. Google says it is only 17 mins from Willow Rd in Menlo Park to Sushi Sam's in San Mateo. It is 20 minutes to Fremont and 22 minutes to Milpitas. All are within your 30 minute parameters.

Please consider Akane in Los Altos. Over many dozens of meals, I've found it to be exemplary. You will find some previous reviews by searching here and Y***.

Good luck. And congratulations to your son.

Thanks a lot! Right now we're thinking of going either to Fuki Sushii in Palo Alto or Akane. Akane doesn't seem to have a website - Do they take reservations, or are they less formal than that? Also, on a Saturday night around 7PM how crowded would they be? How does the sushi compare with Fuki Shushi's? All comments are welcome!

Akane reservations are recommended for a Saturday night. Asking Shin-san for a special "omakase" (chef's choice) set of nigiri would certainly be a spectacular choice for a special night. (You may be able fo find KK's omakase write-up by using the search function.)

You won't go wrong at Fuki, but piece-for-piece, dollar-for-dollar, advantage Akane.

A closer option for santa clara, although more expensive (and generally much better quality with a lot more exotic choices in imported fish than Akane) would be at Jin Sho in Palo Alto.

I love Akane due to our history there... and it is a great neighborhood place for any reason, but for super special occasions, I'd hit up Jin Sho (sit at the bar, a must, for the best experience).

No point in chiming in further then - I think you made a very good choice. I like fuki, but they have greater strength in non-sushi japanese. I am quite surprised that Kaygetsu didn't hit your list, since it's a very 'special occasion' kind of place. Kaygetsu never made the "big list" because they're lukewarm on sushi (they have a little very well curated sushi bar in the back), which seems somewhat on-again-off-again. The limited selection has always been extraordinary every time I've had the sushi there.

          Anway -- enjoy!

Kaygetsu has a sushi bar, but as far as I am aware of, the sushi bar is only for lunch.

For dinner, Kaygetsu uses a kaiseki menu, which is set courses.

The sushi bar at Kaygetsu is somewhat inconsistent; I think part of this may be due to one of the former partner/chef(?) leaving.

After the graduation ceremony, we headed off to Akane. Thanks so much for telling us about this restaurant - it was perfect! The atmosphere is upscale casual, and very comfortable. Serving staff were friendly and helpful. The sushi was wonderful - this evening the salmon and salmon eggs deserved an especial call-out for being fresh and tasty. We also appreciate references to other places, and are looking forward to visiting them, as well.
