Duck leg noodle - dry version - in Chinatown?

I'm looking for a dry version of duck leg noodle soup....egg noodles and duck, with broth served on the side. I used to get this dish all the time in San Francisco at Hai Ky Mi Gia in the Tenderloin. See: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/449244

Perhaps Xinh Xinh can do this? Any other suggestions in Chinatown?

Thanks!

I ended up going to Xinh Xinh where i had the #45 Mi vit tiem. It was quite good - definitely among the better noodle soups I've had in Boston (whether Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, etc). The duck portion was generous, meat pretty tender, nice 5 spice flavor. Broth was also good, and the soup was garnished with fried shallot and cilantro. I asked whether they were able to make a dried version of this, and they said no....but I don't really understand why they couldn't. Anyway, the soup version still fit what I was in the mood for, and I'd definitely go back for this dish.

the mi vit tiem at xinh xinh is one of my favorite soups in the boston area. pho 2000 on adams street in dorchester also makes an excellent version of this soup

Good to know! I've tried several soups at Pho 2000, but haven't had their mi vit tiem yet. I will try it soon!

Good call on the mi vit tiem, whcih I was inspired by you to have for lunch today. I was expecting a standard roast duck from Ctown, but they clearly roast their own legs with their own spicing.

I was intrigued by this so I went to Xinh Xinh earlier this week and got Mi Vit Tiem. I thought it was really good. Love the spices, and like you said, generous portion of duck leg meat. The flavoring reminds me of Chinese cooking, so I wonder if Mi Vit Tiem is Vietnamese take on a Chinese recipe? Anyway, thanks again for the reco.

Aside from the general "noodles are Chinese food" sentiment from SE Asia, the dish is generally found in noodle restaurants run by Cantonese-speaking Vietnamese or Chinese.

Follow-on: Anywhere to get the version that uses a sort of quick-confit (braised and fried) duck leg on the dry mi? It's called mi vit quay and there's a superb version at China Chef Mi La Cay in Westminster CA. I guess this question goes for SF as well as Boston.

Sounds delicious but I haven;t seen it at any of the Chinese places. Seems more like a Vietnamese or fusion thing.

It is a Vietnamese thing... just like the dish OP is asking about

Hi DMP. Most places in CTown will do this (called Hong Kong Style, I think). Just ask. I know that Hong Kong Eatery does as i've had it there. Great Taste would as well I reckon as when i get takeout, this is how it is packed.

PS Try the beef brisket (NGau Nam) version of this.

Is the duck at Hong Kong Eatery good? I've been there twice this year, and didn't have the best experience (although I haven't tried their duck). But I find their food to be OK but never anything special - I usually get wonton soup or wonton noodles, and also recently tried the braised stuffed tofu.

Where should I get the beef brisket noodle soup? Great Taste?

I find all the Hong Kong Noodle places about the same, unfortunately. Good but not great. I prefer the duck (and meats in general) at China Pearl Cafe to Hong Kong Eatery but HKE isn't bad and think there wonton are better than the local competition. Yes, Great Taste for the beef brisket noodle soup, generous portion, lots of collagen if that's your thing, good value.

+1 on the beef brisket noodle soup at Great Taste. I usually request beef brisket + beef tendon. They also offer beef brisket/tenon in curry over rice.

As for roast duck, I've had it a number of times at HKE. Like every other place in Chinatown, I find the duck too fatty. There's always a 1/8" layer of fat underneath the skin.
