Ribs 'R Us: First Try

foodiemom10583 May 26, 2011 05:23 PM

Okay, we blew off another chance to try China White in favor of Ribs 'R Us in White Plains.

We've gotten a little picky over the years with our BBQ. It happened when we were in Maine and found a truck with a portable smoker parked in the local hardware store's parking lot. The owner had raised, slaughtered, and smoked his own pigs. The pulled pork was transcendent and since trying it, our standards really changed. We keep looking for something comparable that's a little closer-to-home.

Ribs 'R Us was pretty good tonight. The food was solid. There was a 2-for-3 sandwich special, so we got 2 House Specials and a pulled pork. The specials were roast beef with caramelized onions, hot cherry peppers, horseradish mayo, and some slices of beautifully-cooked, thick bacon on Italian bread. Oy vey. It was (still is) pretty awesome. You don't miss a flavor. Everything but the bread seems homemade. Good stuff. It feels like it should be on the menu at Big G's, the greatest sandwich place on Earth (Winslow, ME).

The pulled pork sandwich is also on Italian bread and covered with melted mozzarella, which I could do without on a BBQ sandwich. However, it didn't detract from it at all. There wasn't as much meat on it as was on the specials, but what was there was pretty darn good. It seems hand-pulled, with some of the big outer chunks that you get when you first pull a shoulder mixed with some of juicer, smaller chunks. Because it was sauced, it was a little hard to tell if the smoky flavor was coming from the sauce or the meat itself. It felt like it was wood-smoked rather than pressure cooker-smoked. Yeah, it's pretty good.

We also got an order of 8 ribs with honey barbecue sauce that I was unable to try before my son finished them. They disappeared too fast. From what I've been told, they were tender and yummy.

We got some baked beans (tasty), some mixed vegetables that were sauteed with garlic and olive oil (firm and garlicky), and dessert. Our dessert: Peanut Butter Crunch Brownie Bites. Each bite is a layer of chocolate brownie covered by a layer of gooey peanut butter fudge mixed with crisped rice. If you get nothing else from this place, get those (2/$1).

FoodieMom, if you put the town/location in your subject header, you might get more responses.

Sorry and many thanks to discounteggroll and kaaaassss. I typed it up without realizing the restaurant location didn't automatically appear at the bottom.

It's near the White Plains train station, so it's closer to the Galleria, cubanat, not The Westchester. ;p It's an odd location indeed. They claim to deliver "everywhere."

How does this place cook the meat? Do they have a smoker on premises?

Does Ribs R Us have a smoker on hand?
